A Glimpse of Glory: God's Presence Defeats Discouragement

Haggai 2 meets a remnant that had finally repented, returned to the work, and still found itself discouraged. The rebuilt temple looked like nothing beside Solomon’s old temple, and the glory days of the past started mocking the hard work of the present. The memories of a fuller house, better days, stronger health, closer family, or flourishing ministry can become roadblocks when they keep God’s people from seeing what God is doing now.

God does not shame the remnant for feeling the weight of that comparison. God exposes their frustration, then gives Zerubbabel, Joshua, and all the people a command: “Be strong” and “work, for I am with you.” The presence of God becomes the answer to a tired heart. The same God who was present in yesterday’s hallelujah remains present in today’s distress, struggle, and uncertainty.

God roots that encouragement in covenant mercy. The God who renewed covenant with Israel after the golden calf rebellion had not left His people alone in Haggai’s day. The Spirit remained among them, and the Lord who called them to build also supplied what they needed for the building process. God’s work never depends merely on human strength, human resources, or visible results.

The Lord Almighty then gives the remnant a glimpse of glory. Jehovah Sabioth, the Lord of hosts, rules over every enemy, every critic, every threat, and every nation. The shaking of heaven and earth points beyond their immediate circumstances toward the coming kingdom of Christ. Created things will be shaken, but Christ’s unshakable kingdom will remain.

The promise that the latter glory of the house would exceed the former glory finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Christ entered that very temple in the fullness of God’s glory, and Christ Himself is the greater temple. The silver and gold belong to God, but God’s greatest glory is not found in a building’s outward splendor. God’s glory is found in His Son.

Christ also remains the foundation for the church’s future. The past does not need to be rebuilt, because the foundation has already been laid in Jesus Christ. The church can keep building through discipleship, prayer, fellowship, outreach, care for the defenseless, and faith for the impossible. God’s presence defeats discouragement, Christ receives the glory, and greater glory is still to come.
