Jesus’ hard word in Matthew refuses to let peace mean pretending everything is fine. Jesus says, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword,” and good grief, that sounds like a strange thing to call the gospel of the Lord. The narrow gospel is still the forgiveness of sins in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The broader gospel is the whole life and speech of the incarnate Christ, the living Gospel, whose words warn as well as save.

The peace of Christ is not cancelled by this warning. The Christmas angels proclaim peace on earth. The risen Lord stands among terrified disciples and says, “Peace be with you.” The Lord sends his disciples into houses with that same peace. So Jesus’ sword is not a denial of peace with God. Jesus’ sword is the warning that peace with God means war with the world, because the world is not at peace with God.

The flesh and blood of Christ gives the believer a new family. The name “Child of God” is not just a nice church phrase. In baptism, Christ gives new flesh and blood, and the Christian belongs to him before belonging to any earthly household. Being an enemy is not what a baptized believer goes out to do. Being treated as an enemy is what the devil, the world, and sinful flesh do to those who bear Christ’s name.

The unholy trinity, the devil, the world, and sinful flesh, is defeated but still thrashing around. The devil does not waste time on what he already has. The devil targets those who bear the word of Christ, trying to shame them into tolerating sin or joining it. Sin even dresses itself up as love, saying, “How can that be loving if family or neighbors are not supported?” But twisted love is not love. It is deadly.

The law of God comes with righteous fury because sin has to be killed. If sin is not killed in this world, it will kill eternally in the next. The law lays low, exposes, wounds, and diagnoses the sickness. The gospel raises the sinner again with no demands, only Christ, only forgiveness, only the best news: Jesus Christ is here to forgive all sins.

The gospel hides itself in simple places. The gospel hides in words spoken by sinful men, in a splash of water, in bread, in wine, and supremely in the Son of Man conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. The world takes offense at those means because the world does not want God’s pure blessings. Still, Christ is risen, the victory is already won, the light shines, and the child of God has a new family in him.
