Crumbs and Banquet: God's Mercy for All

The Gospel reading sets that old question right out in the open: can those who are not Jews, those not descended from Abraham, be saved? Jesus and the Canaanite woman bring that question into a simple, sharp conversation. The woman says, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table.” Jesus does not reject her. Jesus tests her faith, and her answer shows that she knows mercy belongs to the Lord.

The dog image is not about spoiled pets getting toaster strudel with icing. The image is about those inside the kingdom and those outside the kingdom. The Canaanite woman understands that she has no claim by bloodline, no seat at the table by descent from Abraham. Yet she also understands that the Master is so rich in mercy that even the crumbs from his table are enough.

The Old Testament had already shown that the kingdom of heaven was always open to all. Ruth, a Gentile woman, is brought into Israel and becomes the great grandmother of David. Rahab, a Gentile sinner from Jericho, shields the spies and is spared when the walls come down. Rahab too becomes part of the line and lineage of Jesus. The genealogy itself says that salvation was never finally about the bloodline of “so and so,” unless that name is Jesus.

Christ grafts sinners into the family of Abraham, not by their own doing, but by his sacrifice on the cross. Baptism gives faith, forgiveness, eternal life, and new life in Christ Jesus. The Lord’s Supper gives his body and blood, his bread and wine, after proper instruction and knowing what is offered at the altar. These are not crumbs. These are heavenly gifts.

The crumbs are the earthly gifts God richly and daily gives to all people, inside and outside the church: house and home, food and shelter, clothing and shoes, meat and drink. God blesses the whole world with these earthly gifts, and God calls the whole world to his heavenly banquet. Christ Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. Not one person, not one part of creation, was left out of the atonement given on the cross.

The Holy Spirit leads and guides the church, beckoning all to come. Christ’s last words on earth send his disciples to spread the good news, not by their own power, but by the Spirit’s leading. The Canaanite woman receives more than crumbs, because Christ gives more than earthly blessings. Christ calls all people to the heavenly gifts, and Christ gathers believers to his table as those loved, purchased, and redeemed.
