God's Justice, Righteousness, and Assurance in Christ
Summary
In today's reflection on 2 Thessalonians chapter 1, we delve into the profound themes of God's righteous judgment and His ultimate justice. We are reminded that God's judgment is just, and His payback is a form of divine vengeance that belongs solely to Him. Every person is given the opportunity to know Jesus Christ and to be justified by faith, much like Abraham. The gospel's reach is vast, and even in the absence of specific revelation, the general revelation of God through creation should draw individuals to Him. This understanding challenges the cultural narratives that deny God's existence or promote evolutionary theories over divine creation.
The passage from 2 Thessalonians assures us that God recognizes the suffering of His people and promises relief to those afflicted. This relief may not always manifest in our earthly lives but is assured at the revelation of Jesus Christ. The righteous will be rewarded, and the wicked will face eternal destruction, separated from the Lord's presence. This judgment is not about annihilation but a complete separation from God's mercy and grace.
We are reminded that none of us are righteous on our own; it is through Christ's atoning work on the cross that we are justified. Our righteousness is imputed by Christ, and without Him, we stand guilty. The afflictions we face, whether due to our faith or the brokenness of the world, will ultimately be addressed by God. His kingdom, free from evil and suffering, is our ultimate hope.
As followers of Christ, we are called to know God and obey His gospel. This involves living out the truth of Christ's crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and return. Our relationship with Jesus grants us access to the Father and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, empowering us to live out the gospel and share it with others. For those in Christ, there is no fear of eternal destruction, but rather the assurance of eternal life.

Devotional
Day 1: Divine Justice and Righteous Judgment
God's judgment is a profound expression of His righteousness, ensuring that justice is served in His perfect timing. Every individual is given the opportunity to know Christ and be justified by faith, much like Abraham. This divine justice assures us that the righteous will be rewarded, and the wicked will face eternal separation from God. This separation is not annihilation but a complete absence of God's mercy and grace. The cultural narratives that deny God's existence or promote evolutionary theories over divine creation are challenged by the understanding that God's judgment is just and His vengeance belongs to Him alone. [08:52]
"For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him." (Isaiah 30:18, ESV)
Reflection: Consider a situation where you have felt wronged. How can you trust in God's righteous judgment rather than seeking your own form of justice?
Day 2: Hope and Relief for the Afflicted
God promises relief to those who suffer for their faith, though this relief may not always be seen in this lifetime. The assurance of relief is found in the revelation of Jesus Christ, where the coming kingdom will be free from evil and suffering. This promise provides hope to those enduring afflictions, whether due to their faith or the brokenness of the world. The ultimate hope lies in God's kingdom, where His people will experience freedom from suffering and evil. [13:27]
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." (Romans 8:18, ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you find hope and strength in God's promise of relief during your current struggles or afflictions?
Day 3: Imputed Righteousness Through Christ
None of us are righteous on our own; it is through Christ's atoning work on the cross that we are justified. Our righteousness is imputed by Christ, and without Him, we stand guilty. This understanding calls us to rely on Christ's righteousness rather than our own. The afflictions we face will ultimately be addressed by God, and His kingdom, free from evil and suffering, is our ultimate hope. [08:52]
"For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on an area of your life where you have been relying on your own righteousness. How can you shift your focus to rely on Christ's righteousness instead?
Day 4: Living the Gospel
Knowing God and obeying His gospel involves living out the truth of Christ's crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and return. Our relationship with Jesus grants us access to the Father and empowers us to share the gospel with others. This involves a commitment to living out the gospel in our daily lives, embodying the teachings of Christ, and sharing His message of salvation with those around us. [13:27]
"Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel." (Philippians 1:27, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one specific way you can live out the gospel in your daily life this week. How can you share the message of Christ with someone in your community?
Day 5: Assurance in Christ
For those in Christ, there is no fear of eternal destruction. We are assured of eternal life and the hope of a kingdom free from suffering. This assurance encourages us to live faithfully and share the message of salvation. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit empowers us to live out the gospel and assures us of our eternal inheritance in Christ. [13:27]
"And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life." (1 John 2:25, ESV)
Reflection: How does the assurance of eternal life in Christ influence your daily decisions and interactions with others? What steps can you take to live more confidently in this assurance?

"Look, we're on Second Thessalonians chapter one and we are talking about God's righteous judgment. So now I want to talk about God's righteous payback. So first of all, His judgment is just and His payback is vengeance, which vengeance belongs to the Lord alone. He will give every human being an opportunity to receive the Lord Jesus Christ or to come into a justification of faith like Abraham, like us. So let's hope that the gospel can flourish and go to the ends of the earth." [00:05:01]
"Since it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you. So remember, God's recognized the suffering of the Thessalonian church. He's saying, I see the suffering. You're worthy of the kingdom. Guess what? Remember this, it is just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you. Now look here, it goes more than that. Verse 7, and to give relief to those who are afflicted. So God wants to give you relief." [00:07:14]
"This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ from heaven, with His powerful angels. Verse 8, when He takes vengeance with flaming fire on those who don't know God, and on those who don't obey the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. In verse 9. They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord's presence and from his glorious strength." [00:07:51]
"First of all, none of us are righteous. We know that. But because of Christ, he imputes his righteousness upon us. So somehow when Christ judges you, and me, if we're in Christ, he's going to look at his righteous character and conduct that has now taken our place through his atoning work on the cross. And he will see himself and judge us righteous." [00:08:52]
"Those that are outside of Christ, remember, no one's righteous, right? So if you stand on your own accord without Jesus, you're guilty. That is wickedness. Now, we can say there's a level of wickedness, like you could say, I'm a good person. Your goodness is still not God's goodness. No matter how good you are in moral character, it's only in Christ that we can stand before this throne justified." [00:09:20]
"You may not see the reprieve of your affliction that may come when you enter into heaven. Matthew 25, 34 talks about how God is preparing us for this kingdom, right? And so, his kingdom, there's a kingdom that's coming without evil. There's a kingdom that's covering without suffering and sin. That kingdom is coming and someday we'll be a part of it. So, we may only see that reprieve then, but God will pay back evil, the evildoers and the wickedness, and the righteous will be rewarded." [00:10:04]
"God can do a lot of things. God may prosper you. I mean, I do believe God wants to prosper you and wants you to experience goodness in life. I think ultimately God created us to enjoy what he created, to enjoy him, to enjoy his creation, to enjoy our, and to enjoy relationships. But how much of that gets broken? Not even just wickedness. How many of that just gets broken because we're just, we're sinful people, right?" [00:11:22]
"Unrighteousness, you may think you're right in your eyes, but if your righteousness is worldly, it's unrighteousness with God. And so God is saying here that I will give reprieve for this. I will give relief to those at some point, right? All of us will receive it. And that will tap, and ultimately he's saying, he connects it right there. This will take place at what? The return of Jesus, the revelation of Jesus Christ when he comes from heaven with his powerful angels." [00:12:38]
"And when he does, it says he will take vengeance with a flaming fire on those who don't know God or obey his gospel. So let's break this down. Verses seven and eight. So we know God's going to bring a moment someday where this affliction ends. And affliction could be personal. Again, I distinguished this yesterday. I'll distinguish it briefly here." [00:13:01]
"Someday that will be no more. but they're a product of this fallen world and so god is saying ultimately when jesus comes back with his powerful angels in his fiery and the fiery flame here is important this is a this is setting him apart as judge when you think of mount sinai and the smoke and the fire the fiery pillow a pillar you think of the burning bush you think of elijah calling fire down from altar a lot of times god is known in the hebrews what is a consuming fire so we can think of these texts and fire has this purifying thing we think of shadrach meshach and abednego and there was one walking in the flames who was like the son of god that's jesus right so this fire thing fire fire purifying judge righteousness he's coming back with this fiery flame with his powerful angels and listen to what it's going to do right right here he will take his vengeance remember and romans says this other books vengeance is mine declares the lord vengeance is not ours we want to be vindicated i want to be vindicated of things there are people that have said things for me about" [00:15:41]
"Me abandoned me betrayed me talk talked wrong about me accusations against me rumors against all kinds of things have happened in the ministry and in life and maybe it's happened to you too and they're wrong and sometimes there's no vindication we want to see vindication we just want to be vindicated sometimes but vengeance is different vindication can come and that's a form of righteous judgment of god but vengeance is god's wrath coming out vengeance is something we're not allowed to do because we're all sinners right i can't bring vengeance on you i'm not i'm not supposed to repay you evil with evil i'm not i'm supposed to repay your evil with good that's hard to do by the way sometimes but the vengeance is god let god take care of this on his time hard to do too all right and then he says look vengeance i will come like a fiery flame and listen i will bring it on those who don't know me and don't obey my gospel so this brings us to the last where we're going to end today um i want to end on those two things before i do i wouldn't say verse 9 they will pay the penalty though of eternal destruction from the lord's presence and his glorious strength so those that are outside of the gospel and don't know him will face this destruction not annihilation but a total separation from him where god is not there will be no mercy there'll be no more reprieve there'll be no forgiveness there would be no redemption there'll be no more compassion all those things that god can give us now the mercy the love the grace the forgiveness the atonement that's gone that's those options are off the table and you get a place where god is not so do you know god and do you obey his gospel and i preached on the sunday that's where we want to be christians he's telling the church and vessel just like he is in lexington park just like he is each of us do we know god do we have that relationship with him and do we obey the gospel the gospel that teaches that there's a crucifixion a resurrection and ascension and a return do we believe that the reason christ died for us is for our sins that while we were yet sinners christ died for us why to pay for our sins there can be no forgiveness the bible says in ephesians there is no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood and so jesus gave his blood john the baptist said behold the lamb of god who takes away the sin of the world john 3 16 for god so loved the world that he sends his one only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life well we've got to believe in the one and only son of god to have this relationship with jesus christ that says that listen there's no way to the father but through christ he is the way the truth and the life no so we must know jesus and when we know jesus is spirit the holy spirit comes into our life we end up uh we have an intermediary he he mediates for us jesus does we have access to the father the holy spirit starts to indwell us work in our life we get all this because of christ do we know christ and then do we obey his gospel are we living that gospel out that jesus died for sinners like you and me and we need to tell that message to others so i want to encourage you today i want to encourage you this should not be doubt listen if you're outside of christ this is a bad place to be if you are in christ you're not going to face that eternal destruction because you hold you know him and you have obeyed him so i want to encourage you in christ i want to encourage you to do the right thing i want to encourage you to live your life this way and then tomorrow we're going to pick up and talk about what happens for those of us that are in christ because paul leaves them in verse 10 with this powerful powerful reminder that all will go well all will go well for those that are in christ hey listen have a great day i'll see you here tomorrow remember these two realities god loves you so do i i'll see you later take care god bless" [00:15:41]
