Day 1: When Good Intentions Meet Holy Instructions

The first parade collapses under the weight of human effort. David’s desire to honor God is genuine, but his methods ignore divine directives. The ark, symbolizing God’s presence, is hauled on a cart instead of carried by priests. Uzzah’s death reveals holiness cannot be managed—it demands reverence. God’s grace hides in the tension: His presence is a gift, not a trophy. The question isn’t whether we want God near, but whether we’ll honor His terms. [13:05]

When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and God struck him down there for his irreverence. He died there beside the ark of God.

Day 3: Dancing in the Tension of Two Parades

David’s journey mirrors our own: one day angry at God’s “unfairness,” the next undignified in worship. The same man who asked, “How can Your presence come to me?” later declares, “I’ll become even more undignified!” Holiness terrifies until we grasp the cross. Jesus bridges the gap David couldn’t, turning our stumbles into grace. Worship isn’t the absence of fear but the choice to trust the God who blesses Obed-Edom anyway. [28:40]

Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

Day 4: The Wardrobe of Worship

Michal mistakes David’s linen ephod for humiliation, missing the heart of a servant-king. Her critique echoes our fear of looking foolish—until we see Jesus stripping Himself of glory to wear human skin. True worship requires shedding what others think, not modesty. David’s “altar boy” garment mirrors Christ’s humility: kingship redefined by kneeling. The slave girls honored what Michal despised, a reminder that God elevates the undignified. [26:01]

David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father… I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

Day 5: The Parade That Swallowed All Parades

David’s ark points to a greater procession: Jesus entering Jerusalem as both King and sacrifice. Palm Sunday’s cheers and Good Friday’s jeels merge at the cross, where holiness and mercy collide. The God who struck Uzzah now takes the blow Himself. Communion replaces carts; His body becomes the ark. Every blessing distributed—the bread, the wine—whispers, “My presence is yours, not because you carried it right, but because I carried you.” [29:36]

For in Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross.

Sermon Summary

David, the man after God’s own heart, shows that being after God’s heart never meant doing everything right. David is a work in progress, and that is good news for every other work in progress. The line, “God, you’re my everything,” lands as an honest stretch, not because it is already perfectly true, but because it names the direction a heart wants to move.

Second Samuel 6 gives David two parades, and the ark of God sits at the center of both. The ark represents the presence and power of God, and David’s first desire is a good one. David wants his new reign in Jerusalem to begin with God’s presence and through God’s power. Fathers, spouses, coworkers, brothers, and sisters need the same thing, even if none of them are becoming king next year.

The first parade starts with celebration, music, and good intentions, but it ends in anger, fear, and death. The ark is placed on a new cart, even though God had already given clear instructions. The ark was not supposed to be on a cart, not supposed to be touched, and was supposed to be carried by the right people in the right way. Uzzah reaches out when the oxen stumble, and the Lord’s anger burns against his irreverent act. That will ruin a parade.

God’s holiness makes sin deadly, but God’s instructions were not him being a fuddy duddy or trying to ruin the fun. God’s instructions were grace, because a holy God was making a way for unholy people to live near his presence. God had already been patient through rule after rule being broken. David’s anger and fear show what happens when a person tries to dictate the terms of how God’s presence and power should show up.

The second parade looks different. The ark is carried, not carted. David sacrifices after six steps, remembering that God’s people stand on covenant mercy, not earned performance. David dances before the Lord with all his might, wearing the simple servant garment of a temple worker. Obedience precedes passion, and worship becomes a response to who God is, not a display meant to preserve royal image.

Michal despises David because his worship looks beneath a king. David answers that Yahweh is the King, and David can become “even more undignified than this.” David points beyond himself to Jesus. Jesus enters Jerusalem in two parades, one with Hosanna, one with “Crucify him.” The holy God’s presence can come near because Jesus, the King who acts like a priest, dies for sinners and answers David’s question, “How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?”

And so what have we learned about Jesus over the past several weeks? One king is gonna be not just another king, he's gonna be the king of kings, and that was Jesus. We've learned about the mercy of Jesus. We've learned about the kindness of Jesus. If you were here last week, Mike talked about the friendship of Jesus. And today, I get to talk about the passion of Jesus.”

Verse 20, when David returned home to bless his household, man you can stop there. What was his intent? To bless. He had been blessed and so he was going to distribute a blessing.”

It's not on a cart this time. When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fatted calf.”
