God's Heart: Justice, Mercy, and Kingdom Principles

Summary

### Summary

Good morning, everyone. Today, we continue our series on the Kingdom of Heaven by exploring some of the seemingly strange laws found in the book of Deuteronomy. These laws, though they may appear random or extreme, reveal deep truths about God's character and His desire for justice and mercy in His kingdom. We began by discussing a peculiar law about a woman intervening in a fight and the consequences of her actions. This law, while seemingly bizarre, underscores a critical principle: the protection of the vulnerable and the prohibition against exploiting others' weaknesses.

We then examined the law concerning the use of fair weights and measures in commerce. This law emphasizes the importance of honesty and fairness in our dealings, especially when we hold power over others. God detests inequity and exploitation, and He calls us to uphold justice and righteousness in all our interactions.

Finally, we looked at the command to remember the Amalekites and their attack on the Israelites during a moment of vulnerability. This story serves as a reminder of the destructive nature of exploiting the weak and the importance of standing against such actions.

Throughout these laws, we see God's heart for justice, mercy, and the protection of the vulnerable. He calls us to live out these principles in our daily lives, reflecting His kingdom values. While we may struggle to fully obey these commands due to our sinful nature, we are reminded of the good news: through Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit's guidance to live according to God's laws. As we delight in His commandments, we experience a flourishing and fulfilling life.

#### Bible Reading
1. Deuteronomy 25:11-12 (NIV) - "If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity."
2. Deuteronomy 25:13-16 (NIV) - "Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light. Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly."
3. Exodus 17:8-16 (NIV) - "The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, 'Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.' So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.' Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, 'Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.'"

Devotional

Day 1: Protecting the Vulnerable
The law about a woman intervening in a fight highlights the importance of protecting the vulnerable and not exploiting others' weaknesses. Even in situations where we feel justified, we must find ways to act with mercy and fairness. This principle is central to God's kingdom and reflects His heart for justice. [49:55]

Deuteronomy 24:17-18 (ESV): "You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow's garment in pledge, but you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this."

Reflection: Think of a situation where you have the power to protect someone vulnerable. How can you act with mercy and fairness in that situation today?

Day 2: Honesty in Commerce
The law concerning fair weights and measures teaches us the value of honesty and integrity in our dealings. God detests inequity and exploitation, and He calls us to uphold fairness in all our interactions. This principle extends to all areas of life, reminding us to act justly and righteously. [50:52]

Proverbs 11:1 (ESV): "A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight."

Reflection: Reflect on your daily interactions, especially in your workplace or business. Are there areas where you can improve your honesty and integrity? What steps can you take to ensure fairness in your dealings?

Day 3: Remembering Vulnerability
The command to remember the Amalekites' attack on the Israelites during a moment of weakness serves as a powerful reminder of the destructive nature of exploiting the vulnerable. God calls us to stand against such actions and to protect those who are weak and marginalized. [52:16]

Deuteronomy 25:17-19 (ESV): "Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget."

Reflection: Identify someone in your community who is marginalized or vulnerable. How can you stand up for them and offer protection or support today?

Day 4: The Goodness of God's Laws
God's laws are given to bless us and lead us to a flourishing life. While our sinful nature may draw us away from these principles, the Holy Spirit guides us to live according to God's commandments. As we delight in His laws, we experience the fullness of life that He intends for us. [54:05]

Psalm 19:7-8 (ESV): "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes."

Reflection: Think about a specific commandment or principle from God's law that you find challenging. How can you ask the Holy Spirit to help you delight in and follow this commandment more fully?

Day 5: Forgiveness and Transformation
Through Jesus Christ, we receive forgiveness for our failures to obey God's laws. More than that, the Holy Spirit works in our hearts to transform us, enabling us to live out the principles of God's kingdom. This transformation leads to a life of fulfillment and flourishing, reflecting God's goodness and mercy. [01:11:50]

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (ESV): "And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules."

Reflection: Reflect on an area of your life where you need transformation. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to work in your heart and bring about this change?

Quotes

1. "God gave us laws, not so much to restrict us from our freedom, but actually to bless us. And that's why, you know, in our sinful, cynical kind of worldly secular understanding of the law, we tend to focus on the one thing that we cannot have. Oh, the tree of knowledge of good and evil, that fruit you must not eat. And you're like, why? Why? Oh God, would you do that to us? But we forget that he said before, there's plenty of other trees. Every other tree eat, eat of it, enjoy it, flourish, be blessed." [53:19] (35 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "The commands were given to us so that he could bless us. And if we would just obey these commands. And live according to them, we experience blessings, flourishing the life that is so fulfilling and yet the sinful nature draws us away from it. So let's take a look at what God is trying to reveal about himself in these laws." [54:05] (23 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "You have no right to attack another person's vulnerability. You have no right to exploit anyone's vulnerability. Even if you feel like, but I got to rescue my husband. Because if you imagine this, there's 25 other things that Jocelyn could have done. She could have asked uncles or aunts for help. Come with me. She could have went and like, try to push the person off of max. Or she could have even got on her knees and just pleaded with the assailant saying, please show some mercy." 4. "God is saying, don't do that. Don't exploit those who are vulnerable. That's not what the kingdom of God is about. In fact, if you keep doing that, it will go really badly for you. Okay, a modern day example. You guys eat at Panda Express? Yeah? Okay, I like Panda Express. We go there like once a week. I admit that. Our kids like Panda. They love orange chicken." 5. "God is saying, I hate that stuff. I hate even a hint of it. Later on, there's a Proverbs that Solomon talks about. The Lord detests differing weights. He hates it. He hates it when there's inequity. He hates it when the fairness is out of bounds. In his kingdom, with his laws, he wants there to be flourishing fairness. Fairness. Goodness and righteousness. That's why the Psalmist says, I delight in the laws of God." [01:06:54] (39 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "And the final part, it's about remembering the Amalekites. And it's related to this as well. Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt. As millions of Israelites were doing the Exodus thing, traveling through the land, going into Israel. Amalek, according to Exodus chapter 17, he came and attacked. He attacked you when you were weary, when you were faint and weary." [01:07:58] (27 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "And God is saying, that's the way of the world. If I really push it, that's the way of Satan. Just even using slightly a different stone, just to put yourself in a favorable position and exploit the vulnerable. That's not an idea that blesses you and puts a little bit more change in your pocket. That's the kingdom of darkness at work. And even if you feel like, but my husband is, you know, I'm getting beaten. Isn't this justifiable? Well, find another way. But to exploit anyone's vulnerability, even in that moment, that's foul play." [01:10:45] (53 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

8. "The good news when the laws are given and we fail to abide by them is this. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just. And He'll forgive us our sins. And not only does He forgive us, He'll purify us. And that's the good news. You know, forgiveness is great too. But He actually, His Spirit goes to work in our hearts. So that in our spirit, in our lifestyle, in our choices we make, we live out the principles that are embedded in God's laws." [01:12:58] (32 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "So no matter what circumstances we may be in, where we can kind of exploit someone, take advantage of one's vulnerabilities, the Spirit of God governs in our hearts to say, I'm not going to do that. I'm going to practice fairness. I'm going to practice mercy. I'm going to reflect the kingdom of heaven. And this life is what leads to a fulfillment. A flourishing life. And that life is available to all of us through the person of Jesus Christ." [01:13:48] (36 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

10. "Husbands and wives, friends, sometimes you get to know a person and you're going to get to know that person's weak spots. It's inevitable. You're just going to know that other person's weak spots. And in a conflict, when friction happens, when a fight happens, it is so tempting to go there. You know, the punch below the belt. Expose the weakness. You do that in your relationship. Friction will happen. It's inevitable. Some of the rupture and repair, it's possible. But you go below the belt punch, the weak spot, that rupture that you caused and the repair, it is so much more challenging." [01:15:15] (42 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
