No matter how far we have fallen or how badly we have messed up, God is a gracious God who delights in giving us second chances. Even when we deserve judgment, He offers us opportunities to know Him, to be restored, and to walk in newness of life. His love is steadfast, His mercy is abundant, and He is slow to anger, always ready to extend grace to those who turn to Him. The ultimate second chance is found in Jesus, who offers us forgiveness and eternal life. [04:45]
Bible passage:
Psalm 103:8-12 (ESV)
The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
Reflection:
Where in your life do you most need to receive God’s gracious second chance today, and how can you open your heart to His mercy right now?
When God gives us a second chance, it often begins in humble, messy, or even painful circumstances. The process may involve facing the consequences of our past actions, confessing our wrongs, or taking difficult steps toward restoration. Like Jonah, who was vomited out onto dry land, our new beginnings may not feel glamorous or easy, but God is at work even in the most unappealing moments, using them to move us toward His purpose. [12:31]
Bible passage:
Jonah 2:10 (ESV)
And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
Reflection:
Is there a difficult or humbling situation in your life right now that might actually be the starting point of God’s second chance for you? How can you trust Him in the midst of it?
A second chance from God is not just a reset; it comes with a renewed call to obey Him. God’s grace is not a license to go our own way, but an invitation to follow His commands and walk in His ways. Whether it’s forgiving someone, breaking free from addiction, or stepping up to serve, God’s second chances always include a clear direction for us to follow, just as Jonah was called again to go to Nineveh. [16:03]
Bible passage:
Jonah 3:1-2 (ESV)
Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.”
Reflection:
What is the specific step of obedience God is calling you to take as you receive His second chance today?
God doesn’t just save us for our own sake; He restores us so we can participate in His mission to reach others. No matter how far we have strayed or how broken we feel, God can use us to make a difference in the lives of others. Like Jonah, who was sent to bring God’s message to Nineveh, our second chances are opportunities to join God in His redemptive work in our families, communities, and beyond. [27:02]
Bible passage:
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Reflection:
Who in your life might God be calling you to reach or serve as part of His mission, now that He has given you a second chance?
The greatest second chance of all is the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. No matter our past, Jesus offers forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope to all who trust in Him. By admitting our need, placing our faith in Jesus, and turning from our sins, we receive the righteousness of Christ and the promise of being with God forever. This is the invitation of the gospel: to stop running and start obeying, receiving the second chance that lasts for eternity. [34:31]
Bible passage:
John 3:16-17 (ESV)
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
Reflection:
Have you personally received the ultimate second chance by trusting in Jesus for salvation? If not, what is holding you back from taking that step today? If you have, how can you share this hope with someone else this week?
Second chances are woven into the very heart of God’s character. We see this in the story of Jonah, but also in our own lives. Each of us, at some point, has found ourselves in desperate need of a fresh start—a moment when we’ve hit rock bottom, made a mess of things, or simply run from God’s call. Whether it’s a broken relationship, a struggle with addiction, or a pattern of ignoring God’s invitation to serve, we all know what it’s like to long for a new beginning. The good news is that God graciously gives us second chances, not because He has to, but because He is abounding in steadfast love and mercy.
Yet, these second chances rarely begin in a picture-perfect way. Jonah’s story reminds us that the road to restoration can be messy and humbling. After his rebellion, Jonah is vomited out by a great fish—a vivid, even undignified, image of God’s grace at work. Our own second chances may start with difficult conversations, humble repentance, or the consequences of our past choices still lingering. But God’s grace meets us in those moments, not to erase the past, but to redeem it.
A second chance from God always comes with a renewed call to obedience. God doesn’t simply restore us so we can return to our old ways or run in any direction we please. Instead, He calls us to walk in a new way, to respond to His voice with faith and action. For Jonah, this meant going to Nineveh as God originally commanded. For us, it might mean forgiving someone who has hurt us, walking away from destructive habits, or stepping into a new role of service. Each second chance is an invitation to trust God’s wisdom and to follow Him more closely.
Most importantly, God’s second chances are never just for our own benefit. He restores us so that we can participate in His mission—to bring hope, healing, and redemption to others. Jonah’s obedience led to the salvation of an entire city. Our obedience, even after failure, can be used by God to impact lives, families, and communities. Ultimately, the greatest second chance is found in Jesus Christ, who offers forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope to all who trust in Him. No matter how far we’ve run or how deep our failure, God’s grace is greater still. When He gives us a second chance, let’s stop running and start obeying.
Jonah 2:10–3:3 (ESV) — > 10 And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
> 1 Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
> 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.”
> 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV) — > Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Galatians 5:16 (ESV) — > But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Each one of us are people who need second chances in all sorts of different areas of our lives. And wouldn't you know, we serve a God of second chances. Our big idea for today is that God graciously gives us second chances. Our God is a gracious God. He is slow to anger. He is abounding in steadfast love. And even though He doesn't have to give us second chances, He gives people second chances anyway because He is a God of love. [00:04:25] (39 seconds) #GodOfSecondChances
When God starts your second chance, it may not feel glamorous. When God gives you a second chance in life, it may be a moment of humble repentance, going to the people that you have wronged, confessing what it is that you have done wrong, and sharing that you are going to seek God's power to walk in obedience. Sometimes the second chances that God has for us may feel like a setback in life. [00:12:31] (35 seconds) #HumbleRepentance
So, my question for you is this. What is the second chance that you need right now? What is the area of your life that is in need of God's redemption for you? [00:21:40] (16 seconds) #NeedForRedemption
If you're here today and you're serving the Lord and you're getting tired, I want you to know your labor is not in vain. God is using your heartfelt service to Him, your service to other people and to our community. As we do things for God and for His kingdom, I want you to know it is not in vain. God is receiving glory for that and you are laying up treasures in heaven. [00:24:59] (28 seconds) #LaborNotInVain
When God comes to us and He gives us a second chance, that second chance is not just for our survival. That was brought to light last week by Theon as he preached so beautifully. God's salvation that He brings to us is not just for our own survival. God has something in mind. [00:26:19] (21 seconds) #PurposeBeyondSurvival
God's second chances make us useful for God's mission. God has a mission and when He gives us a second chance, He makes us useful for that. [00:27:02] (15 seconds) #UsefulForGodsMission
God's not in the business of winning football games. He's in the business of winning human hearts. He's in the business of winning the hearts of the men and the women of our communities and our families and our workplaces and our places of education. God is in the business of saving people to himself. Amen? [00:29:21] (30 seconds) #WinningHeartsNotGames
