Bible Reading
Matthew 20:1–161. “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.”
[00:13]2. “He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.”
[10:24]3. “About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.”
[12:37]4. “He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went.”
[13:01]5. “He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.”
[12:42]6. “About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’”
[14:55]7. “‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered. He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’”
[15:46]8. “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’”
[17:43]9. “The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.”
[18:16]10. “So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.”
[18:20]11. “When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.”
[20:39]12. “‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’”
[20:11]13. “But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius?’”
[10:24]14. “‘Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.’”
[19:40]15. “‘Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’”
[22:31]16. “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
[19:28]Isaiah 55:8–98. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways. This is the Lord’s declaration.”
[00:53]9. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
[01:02]Romans 6:23“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
[21:49]Observation questions
- What differences do you notice between the agreement made with the first workers and the words spoken to workers hired later in the day? [12:37]
- What details show that the eleventh-hour workers were not simply refusing to work, but had been overlooked by others? [15:46]
- What did the first workers receive, and what specifically caused them to grumble against the landowner? [18:20]
- What word does the landowner use to describe the first workers’ response to his generosity? [22:31]
Interpretation questions
- Why does Jesus have the landowner pay the last workers first? How does that payment order reveal what was in the hearts of the workers hired first? [17:56]
- The first workers received exactly what they had agreed to receive. Why did equal generosity toward others still feel unfair to them? [20:11]
- How does Romans 6:23 change the way a sinner should think about demanding justice from God? [21:46]
- Isaiah says that God’s ways are higher than human ways. How does that truth help explain why God’s kingdom cannot be treated like a contract in which service earns a greater claim on God? [12:04]
Application questions
- When have you used words like “fair,” “equal,” or “deserved” while also wanting to protect your own place, recognition, comfort, or influence? What might jealousy have been revealing in your heart? [06:37]
- Is there someone who has received grace, forgiveness, opportunity, or a place in the church that has been difficult for you to celebrate? What would it look like to rejoice that God has been generous to that person? [19:50]
- Where are you tempted to relate to God as though your faithfulness puts Him in your debt: “I serve, pray, give, or work, so God should give me what I expect”? How can Christ’s promise replace that kind of calculation? [25:32]
- Have age, weakness, retirement, a past failure, busyness, or the feeling that your best years are behind you kept you from serving? What is one realistic way you could ask and act on the question, “Lord, what do You want me to do in Your vineyard?” [16:19]
- Who in your church or community may be standing “all day” feeling unnoticed, unneeded, or unsure how to serve? What simple step could you take this week to see them, encourage them, or invite them into meaningful service? [17:13]
- In what area of life do God’s timing and ways currently make little sense to you—health, family, work, church, or something else? What would trusting God’s promise look like before you have every answer? [14:11]
