Extending God's Glory Through Work and Witness

Work belongs to God from the beginning. Genesis shows that God made men and women in His image, blessed them, and gave them a job to do: fill the earth, govern it, work it, and keep it. Work did not come along because of sin. Sin made work hard, sweaty, frustrating, full of thorns and thistles, but it did not make work bad. Work remains part of the created order and one way image bearers reflect the God who works.

God’s glory in Jesus Christ gives work its highest purpose. First Corinthians says that whether believers eat, drink, or do anything else, all of it is to be done for God’s glory. The workplace, where so much of life is spent, is not outside that calling. Work becomes an avenue for showing the beauty of Christ to people who watch how Christians handle responsibility, pressure, money, authority, and hardship.

Paul connects honest work to providing for one’s own household. Idleness leaves room for meddling, dependence, and dishonor, while faithful labor helps a family stand on its own feet. Paul also gives work a bigger purpose than simply improving a standard of living. Ephesians calls the former thief to labor honestly so that he has something to share with anyone in need. God turns people who once took for themselves into people who work hard enough to give.

Colossians and Ephesians press the issue of how believers work. Christ stands behind every earthly boss, and His people serve Him even when no manager is watching. Integrity matters in the small things: time cards, expense reports, mileage, office supplies, sick days, and income. A false balance remains an abomination to the Lord, while honest work shows that something different is at work in the heart.

Titus says faithful work can make the gospel attractive, or adorn it. Good work does not make the gospel more beautiful, but it clears away the clouds that keep others from seeing its beauty. Yet a good witness at work cannot replace speaking the good news. The workplace is a mission field where God has woven believers into the lives of coworkers so that they can say, “Be reconciled to God.”

Work must not become an idol. The Tower of Babel shows work bent toward making a name for self, while those who call on the name of the Lord find their identity somewhere else. Christ alone is a good God. When Jesus is life, work can be enjoyed without being asked to provide identity, security, or salvation.
