Bible ReadingGenesis 8:20–9:17Genesis 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
[14:45]Genesis 8:21–22 And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”
[15:58] [17:02]Genesis 9:1–3 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.”
[19:59]Genesis 9:4–7 “But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
[21:13] [26:27]Genesis 9:8–11 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
[27:08]Genesis 9:12–17 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
[27:22] [29:27]Genesis 3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
[08:24]2 Timothy 2:11–13 The saying is trustworthy, for:
“If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.”
[38:29]Psalm 51:1–2 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
[39:49]Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
[41:18]Observation questions- What does Noah do immediately after leaving the ark, and what does his offering show about his need for the Lord? [14:45]
- What two realities appear together in Genesis 8:21: God’s promise to preserve creation and the continued evil intention of the human heart? [17:02]
- In Genesis 9:4–7, what reasons does God give for treating human life differently from animal life? [21:13]
- Who is included in God’s covenant in Genesis 9:8–17, and what sign does God place in the clouds? [27:22]
Interpretation questions- Why is Noah’s altar an important response after being rescued by grace? How does worship based on dependence differ from worship that tries to earn God’s acceptance? [15:58]
- Genesis 8 presents a cleansed world, yet the human heart remains sinful. What does this show about the limits of fresh starts, improved circumstances, or stronger self-effort? [18:27]
- How does being made in God’s image shape the way believers should think about violence, contempt, lust, pornography, and the vulnerable people around them? [25:23]
- God’s covenant promises that he will not again destroy the earth by a flood. Why should God’s patience lead people toward repentance and faith rather than treating sin casually? [29:59]
Application questions- Where have you been hoping that a change in circumstances—a new routine, job, relationship, location, or season—will solve something that is really a heart issue? What would it look like to bring that issue honestly to Jesus? [18:27]
- Noah’s first recorded act after rescue is worship. What practices help you remember that you depend on God’s grace rather than your own performance? Is there one practice you could strengthen this week? [15:58]
- Think about the people you regularly encounter: family members, coworkers, neighbors, people online, or people who frustrate you. Where are you tempted to treat someone with contempt, anger, lust, or indifference instead of as an image bearer? [26:13]
- God’s patience is not permission to continue in sin. Is there an area where God’s delayed discipline has made you too comfortable or less serious about repentance? What could a concrete step of turning back to God look like? [29:27]
- Noah’s failure did not make Ham’s response right. When you hear about another person’s failure, are you more tempted to spread it, quietly enjoy it, ignore it, or move toward them with truth and care? What would grace-filled action look like in a real relationship? [33:31]
- Psalm 51 gives words for confession: “blot out,” “wash,” and “cleanse.” What sin, shame, or pattern do you need to name honestly before God rather than hiding or managing it alone? [39:49]
- Jesus remains faithful where people fail. How does 2 Timothy 2:13 give hope without giving an excuse to keep sinning? Where do you most need to rest in Christ’s faithfulness and respond with renewed obedience? [38:45]
