Waiting for God's Deliverance: Cultivating a Steadfast Soul

God designed men to provide leadership, love, provision, and protection, and God designed that calling to be lived out through a real relationship with him through Jesus Christ. Christ is the perfect example of godly manhood, and Christ gives forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and a transformed soul through his death and resurrection.

Psalm 62 then sets David before enemies, threats, and tribulations, not as a man pretending trouble is small, but as a man waiting for God's deliverance with a stable and steadfast soul. David says his enemies have battered him like a leaning wall and a tottering fence. Their lies, their two-faced blessing and inward cursing, and their desire to thrust him down all show the nature of fallen enemies. Satan works the same way. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and his arrows are lies about sin, guilt, God's love, God's faithfulness, and God's promises.

David does not make his enemies his focus. God alone is his rock, salvation, fortress, mighty rock, glory, and refuge. David leads his own soul, because armies must be led, families must be led, and souls must be led. Psalm 62 shows sanctification in living color, as David moves from “I shall not be greatly shaken” to “I shall not be shaken.” The believer is not to be shaken by shakiness, but to lift the weights of God's truth through Scripture, meditation, faith, and obedience, trusting that God causes the growth.

David then turns outward. The comfort he found in God becomes a ministry to others. Trusting God, pouring out the heart before him, and finding refuge in him are not only private matters. The word of Christ dwelling richly in a person overflows into teaching, admonishing, singing, and strengthening brothers and sisters.

David also pulls back the curtain on fallen man. Low estate and high estate are together lighter than a breath. Man may look like the great and powerful Oz, but behind the curtain he is only a breath in his nostrils. Extortion, robbery, riches, intimidation, and human power are rickety bridges. God alone delivers.

Psalm 62 ends with the certainty of deliverance because power belongs to God, steadfast love belongs to the Lord, and justice belongs to him. God's power is not brutality, because it is guided by hesed, his loyal covenant love shown most clearly at the cross of Christ. God's delay is not denial, and endurance will intersect with deliverance, whether in this life or in the final chapter already written for those who belong to Christ.
