Bible ReadingMatthew 9:1-8 And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city.
[55:02] And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed.
[55:16] And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”
[55:20] And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”
[55:26] But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?
[55:34] For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?
[55:38] But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he then said to the paralytic—
[56:01] “Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”
[56:11] And he rose and went home.
[56:11] When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
[56:18] Matthew 17:14-18 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said,
[49:33] “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly.
[49:35] For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.
[49:45] And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.”
[49:48] And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
[49:51] And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly.
[50:02] Matthew 9:18-26 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying,
[45:07] “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
[45:15] And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
[45:20] And when Jesus came to the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion,
[45:24] he said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.”
[45:31] And they laughed at him.
[45:35] But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.
[45:37] And the report of this went through all that district.
[45:45] Matthew 9:27-31 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.”
[01:02:00] When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them,
[01:02:08] “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”
[01:02:14] Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”
[01:02:24] And their eyes were opened.
[01:02:31] And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.”
[01:02:33] But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
[01:02:46] Matthew 12:9-14 He went on from there and entered their synagogue. And a man was there with a withered hand.
[01:08:04] And they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse him.
[01:08:17] He said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out?
[01:08:24] Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
[01:08:31] Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
[01:08:43] And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other.
[01:08:47] But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
[01:08:52] Observation questions- Looking across these passages, what different kinds of need are brought to Jesus: death, bondage, paralysis, blindness, and a withered hand? What stands out about that range of suffering? [59:22]
- In the story of the paralytic, whose faith is directly mentioned, and what does Jesus give the man before telling him to rise and walk? [55:20]
- In the account of the blind men, what do they call Jesus, what question does he ask them, and what unusual warning does he give after opening their eyes? [01:03:29]
- In Matthew 12, what question are the Pharisees asking about the Sabbath, and how does Jesus answer them before healing the man’s hand? [01:08:31]
Interpretation questions- Jesus raises a dead girl when there is no human answer left. What does that show about what God wants for his people when they are in places that only he can reverse? [46:37]
- In the case of the demonized boy, the disciples fail, the father is desperate, and the boy is helpless, yet Jesus still delivers him. What does that suggest about the relationship between God’s compassion and human performance? [53:03]
- Jesus does not tell the paralytic to get himself moving first. What does that reveal about how God meets people who feel stuck, ashamed, or unable to get to him on their own? [01:01:06]
- Jesus heals the man with the withered hand on the Sabbath and says it is lawful to do good. How does that help explain God’s heart toward needs that seem smaller, manageable, or easy to work around? [01:10:15]
Application questions- Which picture fits this season best right now: feeling dead inside, bound up, stuck and unable to move, unable to see clearly, or simply worn down in one small but real area? What makes that the right picture? [01:20:07]
- Many people quietly believe they need to get themselves cleaned up before God will meet them. Where does that mindset show up in real life right now, and what would it look like to believe that Jesus cares about the place where movement has failed? [01:01:45]
- Some struggles are dramatic, and some are the kinds of things people just learn to live with. What is one burden, limitation, or wound that has started to feel normal to you, even though it still matters to God? [01:11:55]
- The blind men cried out for mercy and received sight. Where is clearer sight needed right now: in a relationship, a decision, a habit, a fear, or understanding God’s character? What would it mean to ask Jesus for mercy there? [01:05:01]
- The man with the withered hand had likely built a life around what did not work right. Where has there been an adjustment to weakness instead of bringing that area honestly before the Lord? [01:09:57]
- Jesus’ miracles show that God’s goodness is not wages earned. Where is there still a tendency to measure God’s help by personal faithfulness, effort, or religious performance? [48:40]
- Jesus wants his people alive, free, moving, seeing, and useful. Which of those words feels most needed right now, and what would change this week if that truth was actually believed? [01:15:21]
