God's Authority: Our Anchor in Life's Storms
Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the profound truth that God is our anchor amidst life's storms. This week, our church faced numerous challenges, from a burst pipe to technical failures, yet these trials reminded us of God's unwavering control and presence. In our personal lives, we encounter health crises, financial struggles, and family drama, but we are not alone. God is the cornerstone of our lives, holding everything together and empowering us to endure. As we continue in worship, let's appreciate God for His sovereignty and seek His presence through prayer.
We also delved into the importance of recognizing true authority, particularly in a world filled with phony sources. The scriptures, especially the book of Luke, offer us a trustworthy depiction of Jesus as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and life. Luke, a physician and independent researcher, meticulously investigated the events of Jesus' life to provide certainty to believers. In Luke 4:31-44, we witness Jesus' authority through His teachings, exorcisms, and healings, demonstrating His power over both spiritual and physical realms.
Jesus' authority challenges us to trust Him in all areas of our lives. We often seek answers from unreliable sources, but Jesus, as the author of life, invites us to surrender to His authority. His power over darkness and evil assures us that we can overcome fear and temptation by pressing into His presence. Jesus' healing power, both then and now, reminds us of His ability to bring restoration and vitality.
As followers of Christ, we are called to live under His authority and bring His light into the world. Jesus commissions us to make disciples, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to continue His mission. We must ask ourselves if we are truly listening to His teachings, trusting Him for healing, and stepping out in His authority. This is not just a theological concept but a reality to be lived out. Let us reflect on these questions and invite the Holy Spirit to guide us in surrendering to His authority and embracing His mission.

Day 1: God as Our Anchor
In the midst of life's storms, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by challenges such as health crises, financial struggles, and family drama. Yet, these trials serve as reminders of God's unwavering control and presence. He is the cornerstone of our lives, holding everything together and empowering us to endure. We are not alone in our struggles, and through prayer, we can seek His presence and appreciate His sovereignty. This understanding encourages us to lean on God as our anchor, trusting in His ability to guide us through any storm. [29:14]
Psalm 62:5-8 (ESV): "For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us."
Reflection: What specific storm are you facing right now, and how can you actively seek God's presence and guidance through prayer today?
Day 2: Recognizing True Authority
In a world filled with phony sources of authority, it is crucial to recognize the true authority that the scriptures offer. The book of Luke provides a trustworthy depiction of Jesus as the ultimate authority in matters of faith and life. Luke, a physician and independent researcher, meticulously investigated the events of Jesus' life to provide certainty to believers. Through Jesus' teachings, exorcisms, and healings, we witness His divine authority over both spiritual and physical realms. This understanding challenges us to trust Jesus as the ultimate source of truth and guidance in our lives. [47:22]
Colossians 2:8-10 (ESV): "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority."
Reflection: What are some unreliable sources of authority you have turned to in the past, and how can you begin to rely more on Jesus' teachings and authority today?
Day 3: Trusting Jesus' Authority
Jesus' authority challenges us to trust Him in all areas of our lives. We often seek answers from unreliable sources, but Jesus, as the author of life, invites us to surrender to His authority. His power over darkness and evil assures us that we can overcome fear and temptation by pressing into His presence. This trust in Jesus' authority is not just a theological concept but a reality to be lived out daily. By surrendering to His authority, we find strength and courage to face life's challenges with confidence. [01:02:42]
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV): "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'"
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Day 4: Seeking God's Healing Power
Jesus' healing power, both then and now, reminds us of His ability to bring restoration and vitality. While we may not understand why some are not healed, we trust in God's promise to use all things for good. We are encouraged to seek God's healing and provision, knowing He has the authority to make it possible. This trust in His healing power invites us to approach Him with faith, believing that He can bring about transformation and renewal in our lives. [01:09:17]
James 5:14-16 (ESV): "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working."
Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you need healing, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual? How can you actively seek God's healing and provision today?
Day 5: Living Under Jesus' Authority
As followers of Christ, we are called to live under His authority and bring His light into the world. Jesus commissions us to make disciples, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to continue His mission. We must ask ourselves if we are truly listening to His teachings, trusting Him for healing, and stepping out in His authority. This call to live under Jesus' authority is not just a theological concept but a reality to be embraced and lived out. By doing so, we become vessels of His love and truth, impacting the world around us. [01:13:06]
2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (ESV): "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."
Reflection: How can you actively live under Jesus' authority today, and what steps can you take to bring His light into your community or workplace?
Quotes
I just want to, for a second, reflect on what we just sang. You know, this week has been one where it has been really good that God is in control and that he is our anchor. All through this week we've had a variety of challenges here at the church. We had early in the week a pipe burst which put us on fire watch meeting people here 24 -7 around the clock. [00:28:44]
There's a lot of things that can be outside of our control and it really can feel like there's a storm that's present. And I mean I'm just listening what's happened here let alone in each and every one of our lives. We have people going through great health crises. Some of us facing troubles with work or finances. We have family drama that is ever -present or for some on the rise and it can be a very difficult thing to walk through our lives. [00:29:33]
But the good news is that we are not alone and that God is the cornerstone of our life. He holds it all together and when he's in place you can be strong. And we can endure and weather the storms. And so as we continue on in worship today let's just reflect on that through prayer. Let's just appreciate God for who He is and what He's done. Would you pray with me? [00:30:06]
And that's why scripture and its depiction of Jesus is so important. Because we see in Jesus a true authority in all matters of faith and life. Now I know right away, some people might say, well, how can you trust the scriptures? And in particular, as we're going through the book of Luke, how do we know that we can trust what's going on in here? Because there's some pretty crazy seeming things that are taking place. [00:45:01]
The book of Luke was written by a physician that's right a doctor named Luke and Luke was not one of Jesus first followers he wasn't some type of buddy who initially followed Jesus all around and had something to lose in terms of a sense of credibility or authority in the lives of others because he wasn't part of the story instead what we see is that he was an independent researcher he used his doctor thinking to turn on his brain and investigate our what had come to pass. [00:45:15]
So Jesus has just left his hometown where he'd grown up for most of his life, had a career for sure, lived and moved for many years, got to know the community. And as he was there, eventually, he got to this place where he was to go launch his ministry to really show the world why he had come. And at first, the people in his hometown went, Isn't that Joseph Kidd? Isn't that James' brother? Isn't that the carpenter guy? [00:50:29]
When Jesus came in, there was something different. He wasn't just quoting the scriptures out of some sort of rabbinical tradition. He didn't just read scripture and have an interesting thought about it here or there. No, he spoke as the author and the clear divine authority on these matters. Even though he didn't have to write a particularenos視 premis like Either and Many of us when we come to faith initially start to look to Jesus for the truth. [00:57:56]
But what isn't right is that as we go through that, for many of us, we give into the sense that the darkness is more powerful than anything else. Because we know it's beyond us. We know that if it was left up to us, we would give in to temptation 10 out of 10 times. Or maybe you're more spiritual than I, 7 out of 10 times. And we look at the fact that we have been struggling with patterns of sin in our own life. [01:03:01]
Jesus didn't just have power on one demonic soul. He had power on the other. He had power on the other. He had power on the other. Spirit a long time ago. He is still the ultimate authority over darkness and evil in our lives. And we need to trust that by pressing into his presence, the enemy can be diminished. We already know that he's been ultimately defeated. And Jesus has told us through his death and resurrection and his coming back again, saying one day I will come and finish this battle once and for all, that it is done. [01:04:50]
I've seen it happen in my family. If you want to hear a great story, ask my mom one day who comes to church here. Ask her about the story of how, God, healed her a brain and back injury I know there's people in this room who can testify to the truth of how God has brought them back from near death by his healing power I encourage you to ask them about it it is real God has power today just like he did back then now I know the question that comes with that because I've had it myself is but then why doesn't God heal everyone and I don't know I myself have prayed to God for a long time daily almost for chronic illness that I deal with I went through another instance of a severe acute stroke that I had for a long time and then to another instance I went through illness when i was in my high school years where every day for two years i lived with an undiagnosed illness where i would get up and i would throw up and i would throw up five to six times every day to the point that i would just pass out on the bathroom floor. [01:10:04]
God has the authority as he sends us out to make this a reality in the world. Jesus said that even though he would go, he would bring us one, that's his Holy Spirit, to empower us to do even greater things than he. Not for our good, but for his glory. And to reveal his authority is not just in heaven, but it's also on earth. And as he does that, he invites us out of his authority onto the mission that we're supposed to live as his followers. [01:13:06]
Jesus has power and authority over every part of life, and he offers it to us, not out of our own strength, but out of the Holy Spirit living in us to bring forward into the world. And so we have to ask ourselves, do we take that seriously? We have to ask ourselves, are we really seeking after it? A pastor I know out of New York asked the question quite regularly. He says, if we ever want to see revival in the world, will we be? Are we willing to be so discontent that we can't help but seek it always? [01:15:10]
