Fear, uncertainty, and doubt press on life with the same old question: “Am I going to be okay?” FUD does not stay small. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt mash together and come out as anxiety, and anxiety drains the soul of confidence. Psalm 23 answers that question, not by promising an easy life, but by putting the soul under a faithful Shepherd.

David begins with the words that set the tone and temperature for everything: “The Lord is my shepherd.” David does not say the Lord is a shepherd. David says the Lord is my shepherd. That one word makes it personal. David had been a shepherd boy before he was a king, before Goliath, before Saul, before the storms of life. Psalm 23 comes after David had lived enough to look back and realize that everything he used to do for his sheep, God had been doing for him.

The shepherd image is not mainly a job description. The shepherd image is relationship. Sheep do not survive because they are smart. Sheep survive because they stay close to the shepherd. The confidence of the sheep is never in the sheep. The confidence of the sheep is always in the shepherd. Everything changes when God stops being “a shepherd” and becomes “my shepherd.”

David’s words, “I shall not want,” do not mean that every desire gets handed over. The words mean that with the Shepherd, the sheep has everything truly needed. The Shepherd is not just a cute caretaker with a stick. The Shepherd is a protector. David knew what it meant to fight lions and bears for sheep, and David knew that God had protected him through battles, heartbreak, failure, and trouble.

God’s protection is not the absence of trouble. God’s protection is His power and presence in the middle of trouble. The safest place in life is not where nothing can touch a person. The safest place is where nothing can separate a person from the Shepherd.

Psalm 23 also says the Shepherd directs. Israel was not endless green fields. David’s sheep needed a shepherd to lead them through dry land, rocky soil, and desert places toward green pastures and still waters. Sheep do not know where life is found. The Shepherd does. God rarely reveals the whole path, but He faithfully gives the next step. Peace is not found in knowing where life is going. Peace is found in knowing who is leading.
