The God Who Sees and Gives Generously

The parable of the vineyard owner rubs American feathers the wrong way because fairness, reward, and earning run deep in the human heart. The workers who came early look like the obvious heroes, while the workers hired at the end seem to have done too little for the same wage. But the parable is not really about the workers, the hours, or even the pay. The parable is about the vineyard owner.

The vineyard image carries Israel’s story with it. Isaiah had already used the vineyard to name God’s people and their failure to live with righteousness and justice. The landowner, then, is God, and God does something strange for a wealthy owner. God keeps going personally into the marketplace, not once but five times, looking for people without work.

The landowner’s question is not an accusation about laziness. The Greek sense is, “Why are you standing here without work?” God sees people who have no place to go, no wage to bring home, and no opportunity to provide for their families. God is not chiefly worried about getting enough work done in the vineyard. God is concerned about the workers. God keeps returning until even those standing there at the last hour are brought in.

The contrast between Lady Justice and El Roi, the God who sees, exposes a deeper vision of justice. Lady Justice is blindfolded, but God sees Hagar cast out in the wilderness, Israel oppressed under Pharaoh, Nineveh in its evil, and the people living at the edges of economic insecurity and political scrutiny. Jesus also sees those in the shadows, pauses for those who tug at his robe, and makes room for them.

Envy reveals how easily human eyes become evil when God is generous. The landowner asks whether the workers are upset because he chooses to do good with what belongs to him. Jesus calls for healthy eyes, eyes full of light, that see creation and neighbors as God sees them. The law, the prophets, and Jesus all press toward the same way of life: do right, seek justice, defend the oppressed, support the poor, and give people dignity.

Grace does not wait for people to earn their way in. The children come to Jesus without achievement, while the rich young ruler learns that eternal life cannot be purchased by doing more. The last-hour laborer receives not a reward for impressive effort but the gift of a living. God continues to go out looking for people, no matter the time, day, or condition.
