God gives each believer a shape for ministry: spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and life experiences. Life experiences include hurts God never wastes, because a person who has walked through a certain pain can minister in a unique way to somebody walking through that same kind of hurt.
Personality helps explain why people do what they do, why they say things they later wonder about, and why friends and family sometimes rub each other the wrong way. Similar personalities can clash, especially when two strong-willed, demanding people both want to be in charge. Like poles repel, and personality can work that way too. But Colossians 3 puts something bigger over every personality type: whatever is done in word or deed must be done in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Christ changes the question from, “What kind of personality is this?” to, “Can this be done in Jesus’ name?” Work done heartily for the Lord cannot be careless, dishonest, or just good enough to get by. A builder working for the Lord does not hide a problem or cover up a flaw. The Lord becomes the true One being served, even when people are the immediate ones receiving the work.
Personality theory identifies four broad patterns: choleric, active and task oriented; sanguine, active and people oriented; phlegmatic, passive and people oriented; and melancholic, passive and task oriented. These patterns are not excuses for sin or tools for sitting in judgment on others. They can help a person understand behavior, and help friends and family be understood with more grace.
Jesus called all kinds of people into His work. Peter appears active and people oriented. Andrew worked more in the background. James and John earned the name sons of thunder, while Thomas often calculated and questioned. Paul carried strong, driving energy. Moses showed humility and reluctance. Christ did not build His church out of one kind of temperament. God accomplishes His purposes through all kinds of people.
The new birth does not erase personhood, but God can modify behavior and even reshape aspects of personality. A person is born with real tendencies, yet anyone in Christ is a new creation. Old things pass away, and all things become new. Christ calls people to respond when He moves in their hearts, even when obedience looks inconvenient, overwhelming, or impossible. Faith says yes to the Lord because He is able to provide what obedience requires.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Personality is ministry equipment, not destiny. Personality gives a person certain natural ways of acting, relating, leading, and responding. Personality does not get the final word over conduct, because Christ calls every temperament under His lordship. God uses strong people, quiet people, people people, and task people in His kingdom. [70:32]
- 2. Everything must bear Jesus’ name. Colossians 3 presses into ordinary words, work, decisions, and attitudes. A person cannot honestly attach Jesus’ name to dishonesty, laziness, hidden compromise, or self-serving conduct. Work becomes worship when the Lord, rather than human approval, becomes the real audience. [57:05]
- 3. God never wastes a believer’s hurt. Pain can become a place of ministry when God brings healing and compassion through it. A person who has known a particular kind of wound can often recognize another sufferer with unusual clarity. Hurt does not automatically make someone wise, but surrendered hurt can become a channel of grace. [46:56]
- 4. Obedience often arrives at inconvenient times. Christ’s call may come when a person already feels overloaded, underqualified, or unable to add one more thing. Faith does not require seeing the whole plan before responding. The Lord’s provision often becomes clear on the other side of a genuine yes. [67:03]
- 5. New birth reshapes more than behavior. Christ does not merely polish the outward habits of a person while leaving the inner life untouched. New creation means that old patterns no longer have unquestioned rule. Personality remains real, but Jesus can redirect its strengths and confront its sinful distortions.
