God's Strength When I'm Weak

Weakness tells the truth about a person. It causes a person to step back and acknowledge imperfection, dependence, and need. God gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless, so the issue is not whether a person is perfect enough to love Jesus or serve Jesus. God asks for willingness and availability, and God supplies what a person does not have.

Moses could say, “I don’t talk real good,” and God could still send him before Pharaoh. Gideon could call himself the weakest of his clan, and God could still say, “I’ve got it.” David could be just a shepherd with no political background, and God could still make him king. The point is not that weakness disappears. The point is that God gives strength where human ability runs out.

Paul shows that same truth in 2 Corinthians 12. Paul had received surpassing revelations, even visions of the third heaven, and those revelations could have lifted him up in pride. The thorn in the flesh came to keep him from exalting himself. The thorn was a messenger of Satan, a torment that beat on him again and again, but God still used it for holy purposes.

Paul begged the Lord three times to remove it. God said no. God’s answer was not cruelty, and it was not indifference. God said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Grace was enough, not because the thorn felt good, but because God’s power could show up in the very place Paul wanted fixed.

Paul then learned to boast gladly in weaknesses, insults, distresses, persecutions, and difficulties. Weakness did not become enjoyable, but it became a place where Christ’s power could dwell. The question underneath everything is whether a person is living for self, reputation, and glory, or for Christ’s sake. Pride says, “Look at me.” Humility says, “Let God’s power shine through me.”

Difficulty has reasons. God may use difficulty to build character, deflate ego, teach humility, deepen dependence, and grow trust. Peace is not automatic when life hurts. Trust must be chosen. Contentment begins when a person can say, “God, this is not what was wanted, but Your grace is enough, and Your power is perfected in weakness.”
