Sermon Summary

Genesis 12 opens with God stepping into Abram’s life and saying, “Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” God does not hand Abram the whole map. God gives him a word, a promise, and a first step. Abram has to pack up everything, not just a backpack and a few boxes, but a whole operation with family, servants, possessions, animals, and the weight of a settled life.

God gives Abram two massive promises. God says he will make him into a great nation, even though Abram is seventy five years old with no children. God says he will bless Abram, make his name great, protect him, and bless all the peoples of the earth through him. That promise sounds almost impossible, but Abram’s life becomes the place where God shows that his plan is bigger than what a person can calculate.

Abram’s obedience shows what faith actually is. Faith is not just agreeing that God exists or having correct ideas about God. The demons know God is real, but they do not follow him. Faith hears the voice of God and takes the step God puts in front of a person. Abram believes God, and that belief is counted to him as righteousness.

The path of faith does not mean Abram becomes perfect. Abram will make messy, shameful choices. Abram will act out of fear and bring dysfunction into his marriage. But Abram keeps stepping toward God. That is what marks his life.

The call of God presses against the desire for control. A person often wants the full plan before taking the first step, almost wanting veto rights over God. God is not asking for approval of the plan. God is calling for obedience on the path. God does not always reveal the next step until the first one has been taken.

Abram reaches Canaan, and only then does God say, “To your offspring, I will give this land.” Abram’s first response is not to build a castle or secure control. Abram builds an altar. Abram fills the land with worship as he wanders, paving the path with prayer. Hebrews 11 shows that Abram was not just looking for land. Abram was looking for the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Faithful steps may look like starting something new, continuing in something hard, getting baptized, serving, giving, repenting, or following Jesus for the first time. The first step still matters. When God speaks, faith steps.

And all the steps that seem to be perhaps by chance or uncertain steps, they're all preparing for what God wants to do in the nation of Israel and in our story as Christians and what he's gonna do throughout the rest of recorded history. He paves the path with prayer and worship. And so what does that mean for you and me? Now that step might be to start something new, start a new job, start a new relationship, to step into a new moment of ministry. Now, Abram, we don't know a whole lot about his faith journey up to this point. It's likely he knows very little about God. You probably know more about God than Abraham did at this time. And yet, God appears to him and says, I want you to pack everything up, and I want you to go to a place that I'm gonna show you. You see that in verse one. What does he says? The Lord says to Abraham, go from your land, your relatives, and your father's house to the land I'll show you, and I will make you into a great nation. So God says, I want you to pack everything up, and I want you to move.”

“The first thing that he does is he worships. He creates an altar. You know, I think a lot of us have been like, let's build a house. How about a castle? Because you said it's gonna be land. I remember feeling so disoriented because I used to tell everybody, like, people like, what are you gonna do over the next ten years? And it would have been easy if we were like leaving there to come to you. Like, we're just coming here. We'd be like, oh, we see that hand, right, at work. Man, the people at First Baptist Spartanburg are awesome. We man, three hours from the beach, an hour from the mountains, that's awesome. Let's go do that. Right? But that's not the step that god called us into. He sent us to another church in a different role where I wasn't preaching on Sunday mornings all the time. Was preaching on Tuesday nights. It was so disorienting, but we knew clearly that God had called us to take that next step. And yet, it felt like we're moving in a way that I was like, how could we possibly go do this? And yet, I felt that if we did not, we would be disobeying the voice of God because God clearly told us to go.”

“Second thing I learned is that the first step is a very important step. I probably would have survived that if I had been facing the opposite direction because at least I could have been able to run. Facing backwards, there was nowhere to go except for straight down. But that one bad decision has not kept me from continuing to take important first steps. And often, the important thing is to continue taking them. How sad would it have been if I would have been like, that turned out poorly, I'm never taking out another first step in my life. And yet these first steps often bring us to really unusual life changing places. We're gonna see Abram today take a first step that changed the world.”

“Well, the reason for that is because he has a lot of stuff. And I know that I never thought I'd have as much stuff as I do. Having children makes you have a lot of stuff. I don't know if you've noticed this, but, like, every Christmas, the stuff just gets to be more. And so even as we purge things, we don't tell them we purge it, but, like, even as we donate things to the bridge and toys go away, like, even as that happens, know, we still find ourselves with so much stuff. Abraham had a lot of stuff. He wasn't just one guy and his wife trying to just, like, trek through life. Abram had an entire city around him. He was probably the richest man in the world at that time or one of them. And so you find that he has incredible wealth. He's got sheep. He's got camels. He's got horses. He even has a private army. Just to give you an idea of the scope of the operation that Abraham has, later, he fights a war against five kings and wins.”

“I'm almost 50. I have a four year old. Okay? I feel the pain of having young children as you're getting like into your prime of life. Right? Abram's 75. I know there's some people who are 75 in this room. Would you like a baby today to take home with you? It can be arranged. You're laughing because you're like, yeah, no. Abram's 75. His wife is ten years younger. She's 65. When they have a baby, Abram is a 100 years old. Wow. I can only have a framework for that. Right? So god says, I'm gonna give you a great nation. Abraham's like, okay. Cool. Cool. Cool. Cool. I'm 75. How's that gonna work? Right?”

“Now, if you're hearing this and you're Abraham, what's your response? Like, how do you process that? Because we don't know how he receives this promise from God. Is it a dream in the middle of the night that happens in the Bible? People hear from God in dreams. Is God speaking to him audibly, but he doesn't see God? Is it a person that shows up, like an angelic being that tells him this? The Bible does not tell us who says this to Abraham. Like, how he hears it. It tells us who, god. Right? But, like, how? We don't know. And it could have been easy for Abraham to be like, you know, I'm just gonna take a hard pass on this. Like, I'm pretty happy. Like, my family, you we don't have any children, but we're thriving. We're we're settled. We got everything going on. Like, we've got our rhythms. We know where we wanna eat on Friday night. Like, we've got we've got this, like, figured out. It's on cruise control right now. I'm pretty blessed already. I don't need to be any more blessed than what I am right now. I've got, like, this whole, like, thing. Like, I've got, like, all this property, all this all these people. Like, I've got everything figured out. He could have just completely said, why don't you go do this with somebody else? And yet, he doesn't.”

“And Abram's father, Terah, decides to move. So they leave her, and they travel up to a place called Haran. And at that point, Terah kinda just is like, I'm done. And he finishes that he out his days there, and he dies. And Abram's trying to figure out what's next in his life, and that's when our story picks up. God shows up to Abram in Haran and says, Abram, I want you to follow me, and I want you to go to a land that I'm gonna show you, which is here in Canaan. Abram doesn't know all the specifics. He doesn't have this handy dandy map. He doesn't know where Canaan is. He's probably heard of it, but he's never gone. But god tells him to pack everything up anyway and go.”
