The Extravagant Sower: God's Seed and Our Soil

Matthew 13 places Jesus by the sea, sitting in a boat while the crowd stands on the shore, and the first parable sets the whole matter before them plain. Jesus says a sower went out to sow, and the seed fell on four kinds of soil. The seed is the word of the kingdom, the good news that Christ died for sins and that his finished work cannot be earned, added to, or bought. The rocky soil receives the word with joy, but shallow faith has no root system, so tribulation and persecution scorch it. The thorny soil hears the word, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke it until it proves unfruitful.

James, Joshua, and Hebrews press the same point. Hearing is not the same as doing. Meditation on the word day and night is not religious busywork, but the way the root system grows deep enough to stand when the devil comes in like a flood. Every weight and every sin must be laid aside, because even things that are not sinful can become weights that crowd out the best thing, sitting at the feet of Jesus and attending to his word.

The good soil hears, understands, attends, and bears fruit, some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred. The harvest belongs to God, so the yield is not a place for comparison but for faithfulness. The sower’s way is extravagant, because he scatters seed on the path, the rocks, the thorns, and the good ground. God is not stingy, and his heart is not willing that any should perish.

The pearl of great price then shows the heart behind that extravagance. Christ is not the pearl that sinners buy, because Christ cannot be bought. Christ is the merchant who sold all, gave his life, shed his blood, and purchased the church as his bride. God looks on his people not with disgust, but with love, even in failures and mess-ups, and Christ keeps sowing because his love is undying and everlasting.
