God Is Our Source of Blessings and Authority

God is presented as the source of blessings, and Psalm 84 sets the tone: “No good thing will he withhold from those who walk uprightly.” God is not stingy, moody, or changing his mind from day to day. God gives grace and glory, and every good thing he wants to pour out comes from him.

The testimony of healing shows that God is still giving good gifts. A body that could not walk from the car to the building without running out of breath became a body that could walk, bathe, move around the house, and breathe freely. That testimony becomes more than a story. It becomes an invitation to say, “If God did that for somebody, he can do what needs to be done here too.”

The issue is not what is coming from heaven. The issue is what is being received on earth. Heaven is sending “a rushing mighty wind of power,” a rushing river meant to destroy the works of the devil and restore the will of God. The soul has to be restored because the soul often thinks, “Lord, just do it this one time,” while God says, “No good thing will I withhold.”

The gospel answers the fear of not being good enough. No person could ever walk upright enough, think right enough, talk right enough, or live right enough to qualify. Jesus came as the substitute, the pitch hitter, the one who walked upright in another’s place. Because Jesus did it perfectly, God can write righteousness on the believer’s account, and the blessing comes through him.

The world is fundamentally different because Jesus rose from the dead. Ephesians prays that born again people would see the hope, the inheritance, and the exceeding greatness of the power already made available. God is not only great and mighty over his people. God has made his people great and mighty by putting his word in their mouth and his Spirit upon them.

Matthew 10 shows Jesus giving imperfect disciples power over unclean spirits and sickness. Peter was not perfect, and the twelve were not perfect, but Jesus still sent them to heal the sick, cleanse lepers, raise the dead, and cast out devils. The kingdom has arrived, and God’s people must get their minds renewed so they stop forgetting who they are.

Jesus also trains his disciples to trust God as provider. “Don’t take” extra gold, silver, coats, or shoes does not mean poverty is holy. It means the workman is worthy of his meat, and the Father can be trusted while the kingdom is being preached.
