Part 1. The God of Rescue, Redemption, & Relationship.

Exodus stands as a great reminder that God is in the business of setting people free. God rescues, redeems, and calls people into relationship with himself, not so that they can merely escape one hard thing, but so that they can know him, worship him, and serve him. Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Newton each bear witness to that same saving power. God met a hedonist, a terrified monk, and a rebellious slave-ship captain, and he set each one free.

The book of Exodus matters because it is the greatest redemptive event in the Old Testament, an event to which the rest of Scripture points again and again. The Exodus shows God working sovereignly to save a special people for his own glory. The story ultimately points forward to Jesus, the true and better Moses, the true and better Passover Lamb, and the true and better Deliverer. Christ does not offer religious performance as the way out of slavery. Christ offers rescue, redemption, and relationship.

Exodus 6 gives a clear picture of a God who sees his people in their pain. God hears Israel’s groaning, remembers his covenant, sees their affliction, and knows their suffering. Israel’s broken spirit and harsh slavery kept them from even listening to Moses, yet God had not become unaware or unconcerned. God does not always change circumstances immediately, but God remains near to the brokenhearted and present in the valley.

God also makes plain that salvation comes by his power. The repeated words are, “I will bring you out,” “I will deliver you,” and “I will redeem you.” Moses cannot persuade Pharaoh through personality, leadership, or eloquence, and Israel cannot rise up through sheer numbers. God puts his people in situations where the final answer has to be, “It had to be God.”

God sets his people free in order to set them apart as his own. Yahweh reveals not only his power but his personal name, covenant faithfulness, and desire for relationship. God does not bring Israel out of Egypt merely to leave them wandering around with no purpose. God brings them out so that they might be his people, know him as their God, enjoy his presence, and move toward the better country he has promised.

Exodus 6:1–8

Verse 1: But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.” [18:07]
