Standing in God's Presence: Protecting Church Unity

Unity rests on something deeper than getting along or agreeing with each other. The covenant to protect unity calls the church to serve one another in love, speak well of one another, and recognise, pray for, and follow appointed leaders. The covenant matters because it is made before God and to each other, not simply spoken as a condition of belonging.

Gabriel’s words to Zechariah establish the foundation: “I stand in the presence of God.” The presence of God changes the heart posture of the church because no believer is left alone to manage unity by human effort. The Spirit of Jesus remains available in every conversation, every hurt, every disagreement, and every decision. Unity begins when believers turn towards Jesus before turning on each other.

Identity also changes in the presence of God. Gabriel does not build his authority around titles or status, but around the fact that he stands before the Lord. Paul’s image of the doulos presses this further: believers are not volunteers choosing where and when to serve, but bond slaves belonging to a good Master. Jesus builds His church, and every gift, role, ministry, and calling belongs to Him. That truth frees believers from comparison, jealousy, and the pressure to make somebody else’s anointing a threat.

The eyes of Jesus also reshape how believers see each other. Gabriel sees Zechariah as a righteous, prayerful man carrying years of disappointment, not simply as a man who has failed to believe. Zechariah’s silence can be understood as protection, giving faith room to grow and preventing fear from talking itself out of God’s promise. Unity refuses to let a wobble, a sharp word, or a difficult moment become the whole definition of another person. Christ is all and is in all, so Christ, rather than division or difference, defines the church.

Service becomes practical when believers ask not merely, “Where do I fit?” but, “How can I release somebody else into theirs?” The church becomes stronger when members make space for each other’s calling. Submission also means voluntarily coming to agreement, working through real issues personally, honestly, and with mediation where needed. The presence of God calls believers to stand before Him and stand alongside each other, allowing the atmosphere of the throne room to shape the posture of the church.
