Seeing God at Work in Ordinary Moments

God’s work does not only happen in mountaintop moments. The mountain can be beautiful, shaping, and transforming, like that night in Monterrey when the love, grace, and mercy of God flooded a heart and chains felt broken. But everyday life comes rushing back with school lunches, work demands, relationship drama, finances, health questions, and all the stuff that reminds people they live in the valleys and on the slopes.

Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 5 ground this reality in the gospel. God reconciles the world to himself through Christ, makes anyone in Christ a new creation, and then entrusts reconciled people with the ministry and message of reconciliation. God is already at work in ordinary places, and he invites his people to join him there.

Mark’s boat ride shows how an ordinary commute can become a place of awe. Jesus’ disciples leave a crowd, head across the lake, hit a storm, and cry out, “Don’t you care that we are perishing?” Jesus speaks, “Peace, be still,” and the wind and sea obey him. The ordinary trip does not become meaningful merely because something spectacular happens. Jesus himself is the extraordinary one who meets his people in the middle of ordinary life.

Ephesians 2 shows that God’s eternal purposes include both salvation by grace and good works prepared beforehand. God’s workmanship is not mass produced or randomly shipped off for distribution. God’s people are handcrafted, shaped by their stories, gifts, relationships, and present places. God has put particular opportunities in front of particular people, often without a dramatic sign saying, “Here it is.”

Self-centeredness keeps hearts from seeing those opportunities. Sin curves life inward, bending even good things back toward questions like, “What do I need?” and “How does this affect me?” Christ reverses that curve. Jesus takes sin and self-centeredness, gives his righteousness, and reorients his people toward God’s purposes.

Spiritual awareness becomes the rhythm for living this out. Spiritual awareness expects God to be at work in a downcast coworker, an honest family conversation, traffic, an interruption, a rainbow, or a person across the table. God’s people can ask in the morning, “Where might I see you at work today?” and at night, “Where did I see you?” The ordinary life that seems easy to overlook is not a step away from God’s purposes. It is often the very place where God is already working.
