Bible ReadingIsaiah 41:17-18 (ESV)When the poor and needy seek water,
and there is none,
and their tongue is parched with thirst,
I the Lord will answer them;
I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and fountains in the midst of the valleys.
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water.
Isaiah 43:19 (ESV)Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
Observation questions- According to Isaiah 41:17, what is the physical condition of the poor and needy, and what is God’s specific promise to them in response?
- The message emphasizes that God specializes in working in specific types of circumstances. What kind of situations does God specialize in turning around for His glory? [02:51]
- In the story of Elijah on Mount Carmel, how many times did the servant go to look for rain, and what did he see on the final attempt? [12:19]
- Toward the end of the message, the story of Job is used to illustrate restoration. How much did the Lord give Job in the end compared to what he had in the beginning? [27:04]
Interpretation questions- Isaiah 43:19 speaks of God doing a "new thing" and making rivers in the desert. Since rivers do not naturally occur in deserts, what does this imagery teach us about the nature of God’s power versus natural limitations? [06:15]
- The message suggests that emptiness, brokenness, and lack are actually "opportunities for the Lord to work." Why is it that God often waits for resources to be scarce or "nothing" before He steps in to multiply them? [04:02]
- In Ezekiel 37, the bones were very dry and the situation looked hopeless, yet revival came when the prophet spoke the word of the Lord. What role does our obedience in speaking God's word play in activating a miracle in a "dead" situation? [17:52]
- Job’s restoration occurred after a season of immense loss and suffering. Based on the text and the message, is biblical restoration simply getting back to "normal," or is it intended to be an increase and improvement over the past? [26:25]
Application questions- We often feel discouraged when we look at our lives and see "nothing" working out. However, God specializes in making something out of nothing. What is a specific area in your life right now that feels like a "wilderness" or a "dry place" where you need God to open a river? [09:40]
- God is a "God of what's left." The widow had only a little oil, and the disciples had only a few loaves. What is the "little bit" you have left—whether it is a little faith, a little strength, or a small resource—that you can surrender to Jesus for Him to multiply? [14:58]
- Elijah’s servant saw "nothing" six times before he saw the cloud the size of a man's hand. Are you currently in a season where you are praying but seeing no results? How can you encourage yourself to look "the seventh time" and persist in faith rather than giving up? [12:19]
- Job received his restoration and double portion after he prayed for his friends, even while he was still hurting. Is there someone you need to pray for or bless today, even while you are still waiting for your own breakthrough? [27:04]
- God calls those things that are not as though they are. Instead of complaining about the dryness of your situation, what are some specific promises or "words of life" you can begin to speak over your family, your health, or your finances this week? [21:09]
