Bible ReadingPsalm 76 “In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey. The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth.”
[17:51] [17:56] [26:35]2 Kings 19:15-20 “And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said: ‘O LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God. Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed. So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.’”
[21:39]1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
[38:00]Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
[29:15]Genesis 3:1-6 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?’ And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’’ But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.”
[31:18] [31:30]Observation questions- In Hezekiah’s prayer, what does he say about the gods of the nations, and what does he ask God to do so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know the truth? [21:39]
- In Psalm 76, what images are used to show how completely God stopped the enemy army?
- According to Genesis 3:1-6, what reasons made the fruit look worth taking, even though God had forbidden it? [31:42]
- In 1 John 4:18, what kind of fear is being spoken about, and what does perfect love do to that fear? [38:00]
Interpretation questions- Hezekiah asks for deliverance so that God’s name would be known, not simply so that Jerusalem would be comfortable again. What does that reveal about the deepest purpose of God’s salvation? [23:22]
- Psalm 76 says, “Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?” How should that shape a person’s understanding of sin and judgment?
- Genesis 3 shows that sin starts before the action itself. How does the heart begin to move toward rebellion when it starts to suspect that God is holding back something good? [31:48]
- If perfect love casts out fear because Jesus has borne judgment, how does that change the way a Christian thinks about repentance after failure? [39:54]
Application questions- When life feels hemmed in and hopeless, what is the “obvious problem” that usually gets all the attention? What might be the deeper issue underneath it that needs to be brought before God? [22:52]
- Sin often says, “Maybe God doesn’t really mean what he said,” or “There is something better than obedience.” Where does that line of thinking show up most easily in everyday life right now? [32:13]
- Some people stand before God in defiance, while others cower before him in fear. Which danger feels closer right now, and what helps reveal that? [40:24]
- Jesus took the cup of wrath and gives the cup of forgiveness instead. What makes it hard to live as though that is really true? [36:05]
- Perfect love casts out fear of punishment. Where is there still anxiety about being rejected by God, exposed by God, or finally made to pay for sin? [38:17]
- Freedom from fear is not permission to sin; it is freedom to run to the Father. In a concrete situation this week, what would it look like to run to God instead of hiding from him? [39:38]
- Idols promise comfort, control, relief, or healing, but they cannot save. What false refuge is most tempting right now, and what would turning from it to Jesus actually look like in practice? [42:40]
