Genesis 39 gives a clear and steady word for hard places: the Lord was with Joseph. The footprints in the sand and Psalm 23 both picture the same truth. God does not leave his people in green pastures, dark valleys, doctors' offices, tense work meetings, or difficult family conversations. God is not far off, waiting to be invited near. God is with his people.
God's presence is not bound by geography. Joseph had gone from favored son to a slave in Egypt, far from home and everything familiar, but Egypt was not beyond God's reach. There is no jurisdiction to God's presence. God does not say that someone has gone too far, crossed some line, or landed in a place where his arm cannot reach. God is omnipresent, and that means missionaries do not carry God somewhere he has never been. God is already there, already working, and his people join him in what he is doing.
God's presence is not determined by circumstances. Joseph's life looked like it had fallen apart, but Scripture still says the Lord was with him. A giant house can look great on the outside and still have no life inside it. In the same way, a neat house, material blessing, or a life that seems put together cannot measure God's nearness. Suffering does not prove that God has removed his hand. Christ suffered, and Peter says his people are called to follow in his steps.
God's presence is noticeable by others. Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph, even though Joseph was at what looked like rock bottom. A life that pursues the Lord gives people something more than surface-level things to notice. God can use faithful endurance, even imperfect endurance, to make an impact on people who may not yet understand what they see.
God's presence does not make his people immune to temptation. Joseph had to stay awake at the wheel, guard his heart, and refuse a compromising situation. Joseph's refusal of Potiphar's wife showed loyalty both to his master and to God. His faithfulness led to prison, but prison did not mean abandonment. The Lord was with Joseph there and extended hesed, his covenant loving kindness and faithfulness.
Joseph's life points forward to Jesus: the favored Son, tempted, falsely accused, brought low, and finally victorious through what looked like defeat. Jesus secures the believer's confidence that nothing can separate God's children from the love of God. God remains faithful, loyal, and present through his Son.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s presence has no jurisdiction [06:31] God’s reach does not stop at a county line, a foreign country, or a place of deep personal loss. Joseph’s exile in Egypt did not put him outside the Lord’s care. God is already present in every place his people fear to enter, and his people go there to join his work rather than bring him there. [06:31]
- 2. Circumstances cannot measure God’s nearness [12:09] Joseph lost status, family, freedom, and security, yet the Lord was with him. Suffering may change a person’s surroundings, but it cannot cancel God’s covenant faithfulness. A life must not interpret hardship as proof that God has stepped away. [12:09]
- 3. Faithful lives become visible evidence [15:48] Potiphar noticed something in Joseph that could not be explained merely by Joseph’s ability. God’s presence can show itself through endurance, integrity, and a different way of handling pressure. People may not immediately follow the Lord, but they can still see that his presence is real. [15:48]
- 4. God’s presence requires watchfulness [29:05] Joseph’s closeness to God did not remove temptation or make compromise harmless. God’s people still need to guard their hearts and pay attention to the situations they enter. Spiritual confidence that ignores vigilance can become carelessness. [29:05]
- 5. God’s hesed holds in the lowest place [30:56] Prison did not cancel God’s loyalty to Joseph. God extended more than general kindness; he extended hesed, his faithful covenant love. Security rests not in favorable circumstances but in the God who cannot stop being faithful to his children.
