God Interrupts to Get Your Spiritual Vision Straight

Luke’s “meanwhile” sets Acts 9 beside Acts 8 and makes it real plain. Philip’s interruption blessed an Ethiopian man who wanted understanding, while Saul’s interruption stopped a man who wanted to destroy God’s people. God will interrupt somebody’s life to see about a hungry soul, and God will interrupt a destructive life to get that spiritual vision straight.

Saul had sight, access, paperwork, reputation, and breath full of threats, but his vision was bad. His natural sight had him thinking he was defending God while he was really persecuting Jesus. The light from heaven knocked him down on the Damascus road and showed that “seeing is believing” is not always true. Jesus said, “Saul, Saul,” because whenever God repeats a name, God is trying to get attention.

That word from Jesus exposed the deeper issue. Saul was not just messing with people. Saul was messing with God’s anointed. Saul’s blindness stopped him from disrupting what God was doing and put him in a place where he had to be led by the hand. His three days without food or drink became a holy interruption, a place where the plate got pushed back and prayer became necessary.

God’s first instruction to Saul was not the whole plan. God told him to go into Damascus and wait for what came next. Obedience had to follow the first instruction before the next instruction came. The problem for many souls is not that God has stopped speaking, but that the first instruction has not yet been obeyed.

Meanwhile, God was also working on Ananias. Ananias had Jesus, but fear still got in the way of the assignment. His questions were not fake either, because Saul’s reputation was true. God’s comfort did not come with a back rub. God simply said, “Go,” because Saul was a chosen instrument who would carry the name of Jesus to Gentiles, kings, and Israel, and who would suffer for that name.

Ananias went, and the first word out of his mouth was “Brother Saul.” Saul’s enemy became family because God had already worked on both sides of the situation. The scales fell, sight returned, the Holy Spirit filled him, baptism followed, and strength came back through the new family God had given him.

God uses affliction, delay, fasting, prayer, fear, and obedience to get vision straight. Psalm 119’s witness fits the whole road: it was good to be afflicted, because now God’s statutes can be known. The call is not to live by senses alone, but to trust God when God cannot be traced, wait until strength is renewed, and say, “Whatever it takes, God, I ain’t going nowhere.”
