James sets the mirror of the word before every hearer and says that hearing without doing is self-deception. The mirror reveals what manner of man a person is, but many behold themselves and go away forgetting. The perfect law of liberty calls for continuance, work, and obedience, so that the word heard will bring change in life, family, ministry, leadership, and service.

God reveals impartiality as His own great characteristic. God has no different standard for the rich and the poor, the prince and the common man, the Jew and the Greek, Israel and Nineveh. God requires repentance and faith from everyone, and He does not lower the standard of salvation, sanctification, ministry, or heaven because of position, education, money, influence, or gifts. God’s goodness receives the repentant, as Nineveh found mercy, while God’s severity cuts off continued unbelief and sin, as Israel experienced after Achan’s trespass.

God’s impartiality gives weight to both His promises and His warnings. God has no favorite who may continue in sin without repentance. The fear of God rests on this certainty: whoever rebels against His word will meet the same holy judgment, and whoever turns from evil will find pardon. The church therefore cannot apply one rule to the small and another rule to the great.

David shows the inconsistency of a gifted man who knew the law but did not carry it out. David wrote that the law of God was in his heart, that wickedness would not stand before him, and that faithful men would serve him. David nevertheless feared Joab, covered the evil connected with Uriah, and could not deal with Joab according to righteousness. David also indulged Absalom, allowing affection for “my son, my son” to overrule the demands of justice, until Absalom stole the hearts of Israel and drove David from the throne.

The fear of man bends conscience, inordinate affection weakens judgment, personal advantage keeps hidden sin protected, and intimidation silences leaders. David knew what ought to be done, but left Joab for Solomon to handle. The nation then felt the bitter fruit when truth fell to the ground, deceit filled the city, and strange children rose up against the king.

Integrity requires incorruptible and godly ministers who cannot be bought with gifts, money, flatteries, closeness, or threats. The judgment is God’s, and righteousness must justify the righteous and condemn the wicked. Conviction, courage, daily consecration, and a discerning inner conscience make impartiality possible. God calls every servant to do all things without partiality, honesty without compromise, and integrity without fear.
