Day 1: Shipwrecked but Anchored in the Promise

When storms strip away every visible sign of progress, what remains is the unshakable word of God. Paul clung to the promise of Rome even as the ship splintered, teaching us to hold fast to divine purpose when methods crumble. Loss of comfort, timelines, or control cannot nullify God’s faithfulness. His promises outlast every storm, anchoring us when circumstances scream defeat. Victory isn’t found in preserving the vessel but in trusting the One who steers it. [11:50]

“The terrible storm raged for many days, blotting out the sun and the stars until at last all hope was gone. No one had eaten for a long time. Finally, Paul called the crew together and said, ‘Men, you should have listened to me in the first place and not left Crete. You would have avoided all this damage and loss. But take courage! None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will go down. For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, and he said, “Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.” So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said.’” (Acts 27:20–25, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Acts 27 and 28 frame Paul’s voyage to Rome as a storm story, but not a losing story. God had already told Paul that he would stand before Caesar, so the terrible storm, the broken ship, and the long delay could not cancel what God had spoken. The storm took some things from Paul: time, comfort, control, and the ship itself. Paul still held on to the promise because the ship was only the method, not the assignment.

The shipwreck exposes how easy it is for God’s people to confuse resistance with abandonment. Resistance did not mean Paul was out of God’s will. God still had an assignment for Paul there, and the island became a mission field instead of a prison. The fire waiting on the shore became a picture of grace: not everything survived the storm, but Paul was still there, still breathing, still called, still able to obey.

The snake bite on Malta becomes another test of the promise. The islanders named Paul by his past, but Paul knew who he was in Christ. The snake could bite his hand, but it could not rewrite the word of God. Paul shook it off into the fire, and the same hand that carried the snake became the hand through which healing was released.

God did not put Paul there to lose. Winning did not mean the storm never came, the ship never broke, or the snake never bit. Winning meant Paul came through with faith intact, worship still alive, bitterness shaken off, and Jesus still held tight.
