#RestoreRefineRepeat
“Now probably the most interesting thing about these two verses is that it kind of could have been reversed, right? Like three and four could have been one and two, and then one and two could have been three and four. Meaning, like, he could have started off with the bad. Right? Like, I'm in the shadow of death, but look. Now I'm in green pastures, and now I'm in still waters. That would have made a little bit more sense to me. But then as I sat in it, I recognized that, no, no. What David's acknowledging is that this trip isn't a onetime thing. This is cyclical. It's restore, it's refine, it's repeat. Restore, refine, repeat. He's going to heal me. He's going to strengthen me. Then he's going to put me in a place that's going to stretch me, that's going to mold me, that's gonna educate me, and then he's gonna do it again.”

#ValleyIsTemporary
“And David says, yeah, I'm going to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Now here's something that's important that a lot of people miss. How do we end up there? If he's leading me in the paths of righteousness, then why am I in a valley of the shadow of death? You just said this, God loves me and wants the best for me and has my best interest at heart. That's what you just said. I'll roll the tape back. The right paths are where we need to be, not where we want to be. Not only that, but what David is saying here is that this valley, not only is it inevitable, it's temporal. I walk through not setting up shop, not planting a flag. have some souvenirs when I'm done, but I ain't staying.”

#ModeledByChrist
“Something that we need to walk away with this morning that is the most important is that this isn't just for us. Jesus did it first. It was modeled for us. What do you mean? Well, Hebrews chapter four says that we don't have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with us because in his flesh he was also weak. And as we look to Jesus, Jesus looked to his father. This has all been modeled for us.”

#LeadershipIsServitude
“David ends this Psalm with simple words. He says, your rod and your staff, they comfort me. What's unique about this statement is is David who is now king was once a shepherd. But now he's a king who's putting himself in the place of a sheep, which reminds me that leadership isn't always about flexing. Leadership is about humility. Leadership is about servitude. Leadership is absent of ego. And so for David to pen this, he's saying, need your protection and your guidance. And not only do I need it, I find comfort in it. There's peace in knowing that even though I don't know where I'm going, you know. And so I can follow you because I know that regardless of what it looks like, they will be good on the other side.”

#DarknessBuildsStrength
“``The dark is where God does his best work. The dark is where God challenges us, where he convicts It's where our strength is found. When it says we stand on a solid foundation on firm ground, that's what that means. There's a whole other thing about fig trees again tomorrow. I can't wait to talk to you guys about that. But the message I want you to take away with today is that the darkness isn't there to harm you. It's there to help you. And if your shepherd is leading you into it and through it, he's going to walk you out of it. And so even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I'm understanding that the deeper the root, the sweeter the fruit.”

#RestoredThroughJesus
“You just said, Jesus did the same thing. Restore, refine, repeat. But in his verse, it says, for the joy set before him, and I'm struggling a little bit because I don't see much joy in my days. And I'm gonna tell you that his joy is our joy. Let's begin. Restore. Jesus came to restore our relationship with God that was broken when sin entered the world. That's what makes him the author and perfecter of our faith. Through his actions, we are restored. Are we not?”

#LedAndSafe
“But again, that has more to do about us than it has to do about him, doesn't it? But for David, he's not mixing any words. He understands that whether I'm in a green pasture or whether I'm in a valley of a shadow of death, I am being led. If I'm being led, then I am safe. I might be afraid, but I'm gonna make it. Ladies and gentlemen, you're gonna make it.”

#SufferNowGloryLater
“And just like Jesus who endured a cross and the shame, he's asking us to do the same. Now none of us are gonna hang on a cross, God willing. We don't know what these days are bringing. But we do know that pain and hurt and brokenness is to be expected. Jesus said if they hated you, remind me remember they hated me first. Jesus says, this isn't the world I created, but it's the world that is. But there is a promise, and that's that ultimate joy. Is that as we endure and hopefully and prayerfully finish well, we will join Jesus in heaven with all of the angels singing, praising in full splendor, in full glory.”
