When God Closes a Door You Really Want to Open | Acts 16:6-15 | 8-16-26

Acts 16 brings Paul to another road closed sign, but this time the problem is not rebellion. Saul had already been stopped on the Damascus road because he was headed the wrong way with passion, thinking he was serving God while fighting Jesus. Paul now is doing exactly what a faithful apostle should do: strengthening churches, planting churches, telling people about Jesus, and seeing people come to faith. The surprise in Acts 16 is that a good plan still runs into a closed road.

God does not reject Paul here. God redirects him. The closed road to Asia is not judgment, but guidance. Paul and his companions try to go southwest, and the Holy Spirit keeps them from preaching there. They try to go north, and “the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.” Luke makes the roadblocks purposeful, not random. The Spirit is not done leading just because the route Paul expected gets shut down.

The vision at Troas becomes the turning point: “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Mission begins when need is heard as a call, not as an inconvenience. Need almost always interrupts something: a plan, a schedule, a budget, comfort, or control. The love of Christ teaches the church to hear need differently, but not foolishly. Paul does not make the decision alone. The team discerns together that God has called them, and then they get ready at once.

The Good Samaritan picture presses the same point. The priest and Levite saw the wounded man, but the need did not interrupt them. The Samaritan saw, had compassion, and acted. Discernment still matters, especially in a world where need can be real, overwhelming, or even manipulated. Yet swindlers and fear should not train the heart to become deaf.

The need in Haiti becomes a concrete way for the church to respond. A closed door to the Dominican Republic opens another door for a meal pack in Friesland. Thirty thousand meals can serve displaced people in Haiti, and those meals can also create gospel conversations through local churches.

Lydia shows where the whole movement lands. Paul is called to Macedonia by a man in a vision, but the first recorded response comes from a woman by the river. The Lord opens Lydia’s heart, and Lydia opens her home. Grace that comes to a person sends that person outward. The next faithful step may not reveal the whole map, but God keeps leading on the detour.

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
