Day 1: The Unbreakable Oath of a Self-Swearing God

When humans make oaths, they appeal to a higher authority. But God, having no one greater, swore by himself. His promises are secured by his own flawless character, making them as unshakable as his nature. This dual assurance—his word and his oath—means every promise carries the weight of his identity. To doubt God’s faithfulness is to misunderstand who he is. His yes remains yes, anchored in the bedrock of his being. [15:43]

“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19, NIV)

Day 2: Anchored in the Soul’s Unseen Harbor

A boat anchored in rough waters may sway but cannot drift. God’s promises function like an anchor plunged deep into the ocean floor of his faithfulness. Circumstances—storms, waves, winds—do not determine security. The soul’s stability comes from being moored to what cannot be moved. This hope isn’t a feeling but a fixed reality, firm and secure, even when emotions scream otherwise. [21:15]

Broken promises make ordinary life feel shaky, because people forget, get busy, change their minds, hit a crisis, or sometimes say things they never meant to do. God is not like that. Numbers 23 names him as the God who does not lie, does not change his mind, and does not speak without acting. God’s faithfulness is not just something he does. God’s faithfulness is who he is: covenant making, promise keeping, always faithful.

Hebrews 6 puts that truth under the feet of believers like solid ground. The text says God made a promise to Abraham, then doubled down with an oath, because there was no one greater for him to swear by. Christ gathers up the great promises of God. God conditionally promises forgiveness to everyone who trusts in Jesus, and no sin is so bad or so often repeated that God will suddenly get tired and renig on the blood of Christ. God also irrevocably promises that Jesus will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those waiting for him. Promise made, promise kept.

The anchor image in Hebrews 6 gives the soul something firm and secure. Circumstances may go from bad to worse, emotions may say God has forgotten, and the world may look bleak, but God’s promises are as firm as a mountain. The Christian life is not wishful thinking. Faith means trusting the God whose very nature makes it impossible for him to back away from what he has promised.
