Speak, Lord: God Calls the Young to Serve

Samuel’s calling rises out of a time when Israel is a mess. The nation has no unity, the people keep going up and down between God and idols, and the priesthood at Shiloh is corrupt. Eli’s sons are out of order, taking what belongs to God and living reckless, while Eli knows the sin is happening and fails to restrain them. God’s word is rare in that dark season, but God is already raising up a child with a willing heart.

Samuel serves faithfully in the tabernacle, tending the lamps, opening the doors, and showing reverence in God’s house. God calls Samuel by name in the night, and Samuel keeps getting up right away, thinking Eli needs him. Eli finally understands that God is calling the boy and tells him to say, “Speak, for your servant hears.” Samuel listens, receives a hard word about judgment on Eli’s house, and tells the truth even though it is heavy.

God trusts Samuel because Samuel is obedient, faithful, and available. Samuel does not wait an hour, next week, or three months from now. Samuel responds immediately. God’s call to Samuel shows that young people are not too young to hear God, serve God, stand in truth, or carry something important for God’s kingdom.

David, Mary, Josiah, the little maid who served Naaman, and Timothy all show that age is nothing but a number when God has somebody’s heart. God looks beyond age, background, family trouble, and human limitations. God sees thoughts, choices, words, actions, and a heart that is willing to obey. Attentiveness deep dives into the Word and listens for God’s still small voice with discernment. Teachability receives godly guidance, and obedience acts on what God says with surrender and trust.

Hannah’s prayers and dedication show parents how to prepare children for God’s call. Hannah teaches Samuel that he belongs to the Lord and directs his mind toward God through everyday life. Eli’s guidance also shows that mentors matter, even when they have made mistakes. Samuel becomes a white flower that bloomed on a dunghill, and God can still raise youth to be Samuels for a time such as now.
