Matthew 10 shows Jesus sending the twelve out with a job bigger than their own ability. Jesus gives them the message, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” and calls them to back up that message with real deeds of mercy and help. The apostles are not sent to sit around and figure out every possible problem before they move. Jesus sends them out to go, trust, and learn that faith is required for anybody who wants to serve Christ.

The what ifs and the what abouts can keep a believer from ever getting out of the starting gate. Fear about money, housing, food, ability, rejection, or plain old awkwardness can become a distraction from the mission God has given. Jesus tells the apostles not to obsess over gold, silver, extra clothes, or supplies because “the workman is worthy of his meat.” Christ does not tell God’s people to avoid planning, budgeting, or hard work. Christ calls God’s people not to let careful thinking become an excuse for refusing obedience.

God’s provision reaches beyond money and material things. God brings the right people into a person’s life at the right time, just as Jesus tells the apostles to find worthy houses that will receive their message. The church is not merely a place to get information and leave. God’s people need one another, especially when sickness comes, jobs are lost, relationships fall apart, or grief hits hard. God often uses a hug, a prayer, a faithful friend, or somebody simply showing up as “a drink of cold water” in a difficult season.

Jesus also prepares the apostles for people who will reject, mock, and hate the gospel. The dust on their feet pictures a refusal to carry the dirt of rejection into the next place. Haters can camp out in the mind while ninety-nine kind people are forgotten, but Christ says to shake it off and trust God with them. The warning is not to keep beating a head against a wall with perpetual scoffers while neglecting hungry people who are ready to listen. The call is to “put coals where there’s fire.”

The gospel itself is the greatest proof that God helps broken people do what they cannot do for themselves. Christ sees sinners who cannot climb their way to heaven by religion, Bible reading, morality, or turning over a new leaf. Jesus dies for all that is broken and wrong, rises again, and offers everlasting life to those who receive Him. Wherever God calls, God equips, and only Christ can save.
