The God who breaks boxes refuses to be confined by human expectations, old patterns, and religious formulas. John 5 places a man beside Bethesda who had been sick for thirty eight years, long enough for disappointment to become routine and for his whole life to become centered around the pool. Jesus walks into that routine and asks, “Do you want to get well?” Jesus does not ask because He lacks knowledge of the man’s condition. Jesus challenges the man’s expectation before He changes his situation.
The pool represented the formula the man trusted: when the water moves, get in, and receive healing. Jesus does not stir the water, call an angel, or help the man crawl toward the pool. Jesus gives him a word: “Get up, pick up your bed, and walk.” The miracle comes through the Messiah, not through the method the man had been waiting on. God may use different methods, but God remains the same faithful and sovereign God.
Human expectation often looks for God to repeat yesterday’s miracle in today’s circumstance. Faith, however, does not demand a five step plan or an explanation before it moves. Faith follows God’s voice, even when His way is unfamiliar. The man’s bed, which had carried him and testified of his limitation, becomes the thing he carries as evidence of healing. His prison becomes his testimony.
The contrast between the pool and Jesus exposes the danger of explaining the past while God is speaking about the future. Excuses may say, “Nobody is here to help,” “I have been here too long,” or “I have never been there before.” Christ answers those voices with one command: get up. The God who brought water from a rock, fed thousands with a little boy’s lunch, raised Lazarus, and raised Jesus from the grave still breaks limitations, cycles, chains, and expectations.
Christ’s resurrection means that failure, diagnosis, disappointment, and yesterday do not have the final word. Faith is not connected to the method. Faith is connected to the Master. Hope is not built in the pool, in a door, in people, or in familiar answers. Hope is built on Jesus. God’s people are called to get their eyes off what failed, get their eyes off yesterday, respond to His word, and walk forward into what God has purposed.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God is bigger than formulas [28:57] Formulas can make faith feel manageable, but they can also shrink God down to past experiences. God used a rod, a jawbone, a slingshot, ravens, a widow, and a cross, yet none of those methods limited His power. Faith trusts God’s character when His method is different. God does not owe anybody a repeat of yesterday’s process. [28:57]
- 2. Jesus challenges expectations before changing situations [24:30] Jesus asked the man whether he wanted to be made whole, even though thirty eight years of suffering were plainly visible. The question reached beyond the man’s condition and confronted the expectation he had built around the pool. God may be speaking about a future while old pain keeps giving explanations about the past. A changed perspective can become the doorway to obedient faith. [24:30]
- 3. Faith moves when God speaks [35:44] Jesus gave the man a word, not a detailed explanation of how the healing would happen. The man’s responsibility was not to understand every step but to rise in response to Christ’s command. Faith becomes real when God’s word produces movement, not merely excitement. “Get up, take up your bed, and walk” still calls broken places into action. [35:44]
- 4. The bed can become a testimony [37:12] The bed that carried the man for thirty eight years represented weakness, limitation, and a life held down. Jesus turned that same bed into evidence that the man had been made whole. God can make fear, rejection, addiction, disappointment, and old mindsets lose their power to carry a life. What once looked like a prison can testify that Christ brought deliverance. [37:12]
- 5. Hope is built on Jesus [45:05] The pool was never meant to become the man’s final hope, because Jesus Himself stood in the room. Doors may open or close, answers may come quickly or require waiting, but God is still God. Faith is not tied to the answer somebody expected. Faith rests in the Master who remains faithful in every outcome.
