God Makes All Things Beautiful in His Time

Change is inevitable, whether anybody likes it or not. Times and seasons do not ask permission, and they do not care if a person goes through them joyfully or kicking and screaming. Change shows up in family, work, church life, health, grief, aging, loss, and even in the small routines that get messed up when the coffee is missing.

Ecclesiastes 3 lays out life as a movement from one side to the other: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to weep and a time to laugh. The teacher gives no hint that people control these times and seasons. The text simply says there is a time, and human beings live in and through it. Control is not given over the season itself, but response is given over to the person walking through it.

God has a purpose in the times and seasons of life, even when that purpose cannot be seen. Ecclesiastes says God has made everything beautiful in its time, but also says people cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. The cross looked like sorrow, loss, and defeat to the disciples, yet God was accomplishing salvation through it. The inability to see does not mean God is absent.

Joseph’s life shows what it looks like when change is long, unfair, ugly, and unjust. Joseph went from favored son, to pit, to slavery, to Potiphar’s house, to prison, and finally to power in Egypt. His brothers meant evil, but Joseph could later say, “God sent me ahead of you.” What looked like betrayal and ruin became the path God used to save many lives.

God is in control when people are not. Nothing catches God off guard, and nothing that touches a life is wasted. Romans 8:28 holds steady over the good, the bad, the brokenness, the sorrow, the grief, the failure, and the sin. God takes all things for those in Christ and works them for good.

The cross is the clearest proof that God can take a mangled wreck and make it beautiful. Nothing was more twisted and unjust than the sinless Lamb of God crucified for sinners, yet that place became the place of grace, mercy, and victory. God never changes. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in his time he makes all things beautiful.
