Glorifying God Through Spiritual Sight and His Word
Devotional
Day 1: Glorifying God by Knowing, Enjoying, and Reflecting Him
Our primary purpose in life is to glorify God, which involves knowing Him accurately, enjoying Him intensely, and reflecting Him consistently in our actions. This is not just a call to passive acknowledgment but an active engagement with God's character and presence. Isaiah 43 and 1 Corinthians 10:31 remind us that we are created for His glory, and everything we do should be directed towards that end. This means that our daily lives, decisions, and interactions should be a testament to His greatness and love. By knowing God through His Word, enjoying His presence in our lives, and reflecting His character in our actions, we fulfill the essence of our existence. [00:31]
Isaiah 43:7 (ESV): "Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made."
Reflection: In what specific ways can you reflect God's character in your interactions with others today?
Day 2: Spiritual Sight to See God's Glory
To truly know and enjoy God's glory, we must see it with the eyes of our hearts. This spiritual sight is essential because many see Jesus but do not perceive His glory due to spiritual blindness. Ephesians 1 speaks of the eyes of our hearts being enlightened so that we may know the hope to which He has called us. This spiritual sight is not something we can achieve on our own; it is a gift from God that allows us to perceive His glory and respond to it with worship and obedience. Without this spiritual sight, we may miss the beauty and majesty of God's presence in our lives. [05:25]
Ephesians 1:18 (ESV): "Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need God to open the eyes of your heart to see His glory more clearly?
Day 3: The New Birth as the Key to Spiritual Sight
The new birth is crucial for spiritual sight, as it transforms us from spiritual death to life. This transformation allows us to see Christ as supremely glorious and is achieved through the work of the Holy Spirit. The new birth is not just a change in behavior but a fundamental transformation of our nature, enabling us to perceive and appreciate the glory of Christ. This spiritual rebirth is intricately linked to the Word of God, as it is through the living and abiding Word that we are born again. The Holy Spirit works in tandem with the Word to open our eyes to the beauty and majesty of Christ. [09:23]
1 Peter 1:23 (ESV): "Since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God."
Reflection: How has your understanding of being "born again" changed your perspective on seeing and experiencing God's glory?
Day 4: The Word of God as the Means of New Birth
The new birth is intricately linked to the Word of God. The Holy Spirit works through the proclamation of the gospel to open blind eyes to see the glory of Christ. This highlights the importance of engaging with Scripture, as it is through the Word that we encounter the living God and experience the transformation of our hearts and minds. The Word of God is not just a collection of ancient texts but a living and active means by which God reveals Himself to us. By devoting ourselves to the careful and thoughtful reading of Scripture, we open ourselves to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. [11:09]
James 1:18 (ESV): "Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures."
Reflection: What specific steps can you take to engage more deeply with God's Word this week?
Day 5: Meeting God Through His Word
God reveals Himself through His Word, and it is through careful and thoughtful reading of Scripture that we encounter Him. This engagement with the Word leads to a deeper relationship with God and a life that glorifies Him. As God revealed Himself to Samuel by His Word, so He reveals Himself to us today. This encounter is not limited to personal study but extends to the proclamation and application of His Word in our lives. By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we allow God to speak to us, guide us, and transform us into His likeness. [16:16]
1 Samuel 3:21 (ESV): "And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord."
Reflection: How can you create a consistent habit of meeting God through His Word in your daily routine?
Sermon Summary
In our journey to understand why we should focus so intently on the Bible, we begin with the foundational truth that God calls each of us to glorify Him. This glorification is achieved by knowing Him accurately, enjoying Him intensely, and reflecting Him consistently in our actions. This is the essence of our existence, as stated in Isaiah 43 and 1 Corinthians 10:31. We are created for His glory, and everything we do should be to that end.
To glorify God, we must first see His glory. This seeing is not merely physical but involves the eyes of our hearts, as Paul describes in Ephesians 1. Many see Jesus but do not perceive His glory because their spiritual eyes are blinded. The new birth is essential for this spiritual sight. As God commanded light to shine out of darkness in creation, He shines in our hearts to reveal the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. This transformation is the new birth, making us spiritually alive and capable of seeing Christ as supremely glorious.
The new birth is intricately linked to the Word of God. We are born again through the living and abiding Word, as stated in 1 Peter. The Holy Spirit works in tandem with the Word, not apart from it. This is why the proclamation of the gospel is crucial; it is the means by which the Spirit opens blind eyes to see the glory of Christ.
Meeting God and seeing His glory happens through His Word. As God revealed Himself to Samuel by His Word, so He reveals Himself to us today. This encounter with God is not limited to personal study but extends to the proclamation and application of His Word in our lives. Therefore, we must devote ourselves to the careful and thoughtful reading of Scripture, as it is through this engagement that we perceive the insights into the mystery of Christ.
In summary, our focus on the Bible is driven by the desire to know, enjoy, and reflect God's glory. This is achieved through the new birth, the Word of God, and the Spirit's work, leading us to a deeper relationship with God and a life that glorifies Him.

Sermon Clips
God's call on every human being is that we glorify Him by knowing Him accurately in our thoughts and by enjoying Him intensely in our emotions and by reflecting Him consistently in our actions. That is the call of God on your life. I'll give you some Bible for that in just a minute but that's my starting place in this seminar. [00:17:46]
God is calling each of us to show His supreme greatness by using our mind to grasp His truth, using our heart to feel His beauty, using our body to put that truth and beauty on display. Those all say the same thing. So that's why you exist. You have a mind in the image of God, you have an emotion/will in the image of God, and you have a body to act it out in this world. [00:67:04]
Seeing God's glory is essential to knowing it and enjoying it. So now we've got seeing as the main issue. Jesus said seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear nor do they understand. What in the world does seeing they do not see mean? It means we have two kinds of eyes, these and these. [00:323:68]
The new birth is that God, who said let light shine out of darkness in the first creation, has shown in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. That's the new birth. The new earth language isn't used there, but new creation is, and that's the same reality. [00:524:08]
You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable through the living and abiding word of God. So the new birth by the Spirit doesn't happen abstracted from, disconnected from the word of God. The Holy Spirit doesn't move throughout the world where the gospel is not preached and cause people to be born again. [00:650:80]
The Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord. There's nothing I want more in this world than to meet God, deal with God, see God, feel God, experience the presence and power of God. I want to be near God and not consumed. [00:960:32]
You want to meet God? This is where you meet God. Or lest we sound too study-ish at that moment, this in you lived and applied everywhere you go, you probably will meet God in the speaking of the word of God as often as in the reading of the word of God. [01:014:72]
Therefore, we give ourselves to careful, thoughtful reading of God's inspired spokesmen like the apostle Paul. And here's a key passage concerning Paul's own sense of divine inspiration as he writes: We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given to us by God. [01:077:44]
When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ. Isn't that amazing? When you read this, this is Ephesians 3:4. Paul said to the Ephesians, when you read this, you can see my insight in the mystery of Christ, not when you pray for that insight without reading, but when you read it. [01:398:24]
Paul said to Timothy, think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Think, for the Lord will give. Now, a lot of you probably have felt that sometime in your life, like you're in one camp or the other. I'm the kind that depend on the Lord to give me insight. [01:437:91]
God answers this prayer for those who think and pray. He acts, He works. Okay, that's my answer to the question, why focus on the Bible? Because in the Bible, God's spokesman are speaking, and in speaking, God Himself reveals and He reveals His glory, a glory to be truly known, a glory to be enjoyed. [01:621:03]
In summary, our focus on the Bible is driven by the desire to know, enjoy, and reflect God's glory. This is achieved through the new birth, the Word of God, and the Spirit's work, leading us to a deeper relationship with God and a life that glorifies Him. [01:654:39]
