Give It To God

Matthew 15 puts a desperate Canaanite woman in the road with Jesus, crying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, son of David.” The text lets her stand unnamed because her hurt could belong to anybody whose life has gotten too heavy to carry. Her daughter is cruelly tormented, and that pain pushes her to Jesus because she has reached the place where human strength cannot fix it.

The driver keeps banging on the back, trying to keep half the birds in the air, and that picture tells the truth about people trying to keep hurts, hangups, and habits from crashing down. Bad habits are not usually the root. The habit is often the hurt screaming in disguise. Drinking, smoking, shopping, eating, running to a man or a woman, or reaching for another escape may look like the problem, but the hurt underneath keeps hollering until God gets to the root.

Doubt stands in the way and asks whether the case is too far gone. The woman has every reason to doubt because she is a Canaanite, outside the house of Israel, from cursed people and enemy territory. Still, doubt does not stop her from crying out. The size of faith is not the main thing. The issue is where that faith is placed, because a little faith in a big God can still get results.

Guilt also tries to block the way to Jesus. Satan works as the accuser, dragging up every broken promise, every repeated sin, every “I ain’t never gonna do that again.” But God does not love his children based on how good they are. God loves based on how good he is. Salvation rests on what Jesus did, not on what a person did or did not do.

Fear holds tight to control, even though nobody is really in control. Upbringing, opinions, wounds, habits, and addictions already pull the strings. Real freedom is choosing what controls life, and giving God control means letting the Father take care of what his child cannot carry.

Pride finally has to bow. Jesus speaks of children’s bread and dogs, and the woman answers, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table.” Her humility is not weakness. It is strength under control. Jesus calls her faith great, sends her home on a promise, and her daughter is healed. The cross and the empty grave stand as God’s track record: Friday looked silent, Saturday looked hopeless, but early Sunday morning Jesus got up with all power.
