Individual greatness does not always equal team success. The same is true in the church: a gift that draws attention to one person without helping anybody else misses its purpose. The Corinthians did not lack spiritual gifts. Their trouble began when they used those gifts for their own good, their own glory, and their own preferences. Living for personal interests rather than the common good made a gifted church a messy church.
Paul brings the Corinthians back to the source of their gifts. The Holy Spirit leads people to confess that Jesus is Lord, and that same Spirit works in every believer. Different gifts, different kinds of service, and different kinds of working come from the same God. None comes from a smaller Holy Spirit. Comparison makes no sense when every gift comes from him and serves the same purpose: building others up.
The body makes that purpose plain. Every part plays a part, including the weaker and unseen parts. A church needs more than its most visible people, just as a hospital needs more than a brilliant surgeon. Ordinary service matters, even when it means cleaning chairs with lint rollers.
The “manifestation of the Spirit” also means something remarkable: spiritual gifts are not separate packages dropped down from God. They are the Holy Spirit working in and through believers as they encourage, welcome, serve, and speak God’s word. Christian service does not depend on simply mustering up more energy.
Paul applies the same standard to gathered worship. Gifts must strengthen the whole church rather than produce confusion or make someone look impressive. Love and the common good govern their use. Discovering those gifts calls for prayer, input from mature believers, a survey used as a starting point, and actual service. God has gifted believers to contribute, not to sit on the sidelines.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Different Gifts Come From One Spirit. Comparing gifts can make another believer seem like a super Christian while ordinary service seems unimportant. Paul keeps repeating “the same Spirit” because different gifts are not evidence of different levels of God’s presence. Every believer’s contribution belongs to the same work of building others up. [48:48]
- 2. Unseen Service Is Still Essential Service. The body cannot function through its most noticeable parts alone. Cleaning chairs may attract little attention, but it still contributes to the church’s life and care. Refusing a task because it seems beneath someone works against the truth that every part plays a part. [57:55]
- 3. Spiritual Gifts Display God At Work. A spiritual gift is not something detached from God that a believer operates alone. Encouragement, hospitality, and speaking God’s word become places where the Holy Spirit works through human words and actions. That makes service a matter of dependence on him, not simply finding enough energy to get through another responsibility. [1:00:55]
- 4. Building Others Up Matters More Than Impressing. A striking spiritual experience does not automatically benefit a gathered church. Paul calls for gifts to be used in ways that others can understand and receive, rather than ways that create confusion or an inside group. The question is not how impressive a gift appears, but whether the church is strengthened through it. [1:08:01]
- 5. Discovering Gifts Takes Prayer And Participation. Prayer and the observations of mature Christians help believers recognize how the Spirit is working. A spiritual gifts survey can offer a starting point, but it cannot replace either of those things. Actual service also matters, because trying a ministry, noticing what works, and trying again can bring gifts into clearer view. [1:11:43]
