Paul does not say, “The wages of sin is death, and the wages of God are life.” The Christian life is not a payroll system. God gives a gift. Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard exposes the same truth: it is all grace, and there are no wages to earn. Scorekeeping wrecks family harmony inside the church and poisons outreach outside the walls.

God creates humanity in the image of God and calls it very good. Christ stretches out his arms of love on the hardwood of the cross so that everyone might come within reach of his saving embrace. Eternal life is not only heaven after death. Eternal life is aionios, God’s kind of life, beginning now. The church’s life is meant to be a preview of coming attractions, a life where the loved become loving, the forgiven become forgiving, the graced become gracious, and the mercied become merciful.

We can't see how sin invades the monetary system and mammon. We can't see how sin is a power that just draws us in. And the next thing we know, we have fallen into a black hole. We've been overcome by power, and we don't recognize ourselves anymore, the life that God gave.”
