Exodus 4 drops Moses into one of the strangest and most uncomfortable scenes in Scripture. Yahweh has called Moses, equipped him, given him signs, promised Aaron’s help, and sent him toward Egypt to lead Israel out of slavery. Yet Yahweh meets Moses on the road and seeks to put him to death because Moses has neglected the covenant sign of circumcision for his son. The text puts Pharaoh’s firstborn and Moses’ firstborn right beside each other, showing that God does not play around with covenant faithfulness.
Moses’ failure exposes a danger that grows especially familiar the longer somebody walks with Christ. The temptation says, “I’ll deal with that later,” because church attendance, serving, giving, leading, or being used by God can make hidden disobedience feel small. God’s grace does not mean God does not care about sin. Moses cannot carry God’s mission while casually neglecting the God who gave him the mission.
Zipporah acts immediately. Her quick response pictures repentance as bringing sin into the light and saying, “God, You’re right. I’m wrong.” Repentance does not begin with a ten-step plan to fix the self. Repentance confesses weakness, addiction, failure, and the things left undone, then lays them before God and asks Him to work.
God’s faithfulness remains steady even while Moses has failed. Aaron is already on the way, the signs still happen, Israel believes, and the people bow their heads and worship. God does not abandon Moses after repentance. The covenant grace of God means that failure is serious, but failure does not get the final word for the one who returns to Him.
The blood in this strange scene points forward. The covenant sign, the coming Passover blood on the doorposts, the sacrifice under the Mosaic covenant, and finally Christ’s blood all move toward the same reality. Jesus does not merely announce that sinners can be forgiven. Jesus gives His blood so that sinners are forgiven. His body is broken, His blood establishes the new covenant, and His righteousness covers those who confess, repent, trust Him, and come to His table.
The Lord’s Supper becomes a celebration of unhindered communion with God. Christ’s covenant does not rest on human perfection but on His finished work. The believer can bring even the hidden two percent into the light, receive forgiveness, and worship as a beloved child of God.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Do not put sin off [29:32] Sin becomes dangerous when it becomes tolerable. The heart can always find a reason to delay obedience, especially when life appears productive and spiritual on the surface. Repentance begins when excuses stop and sin is brought honestly before God. [29:32]
- 2. Repentance means bringing weakness to God [26:21] Repentance is not self-repair or a promise to become impressive tomorrow. Confession admits that the heart cannot manage its own darkness. God receives the sinner who stops hiding and asks Him to work where strength has failed. [26:21]
- 3. God remains faithful after failure [32:30] Moses’ sin matters deeply, but God’s purpose for Moses does not disappear after repentance. Aaron is still coming, the promises are still moving, and Israel still hears God’s word. God’s faithfulness does not depend on flawless performance. [32:30]
- 4. Christ’s blood fulfills every covenant sign [37:23] Blood throughout Exodus points beyond itself to Jesus Christ. The covenant signs and sacrifices reveal that sin requires a payment that human effort cannot provide. Christ gives Himself as the final and sufficient covering for His people. [37:23]
- 5. Communion celebrates unhindered access to God [48:34] The bread and cup declare that Christ has taken the judgment sinners deserve. The new covenant gives confidence that confessed sin no longer stands between God and His children. Reverence and celebration belong together at the Lord’s table.
