Get Your Fire Back | The Overcomer Within, Pt. 7

Revelation 3:14-22 brings a straight word to a church that had money, medicine, influence, and everything it thought it needed, yet did not realize it was spiritually wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. Christ, the Amen and faithful and true witness, knows the works of Laodicea and will not accept a life that is neither hot nor cold. Lukewarmness is a passive attitude toward God, when religious labels remain but passion, commitment, prayer, and fruit have faded away.

The picture of active cruise control shows the difference between active faith and passive religion. Active faith sees what is happening and responds, while passivity just goes along because church attendance has become a habit or an obligation. Trials, church hurt, lies, rejection, and disappointment can put out a person’s fire little by little. Lukewarmness often comes subtly, until a believer looks up and realizes that the fire is gone.

Christ exposes Laodicea’s real poverty behind its outward success. Gold refined by fire, white garments, and eye ointment all come from Him because human wealth, good deeds, prestige, and power cannot buy the kingdom of God. The prodigal son shows the heart of the Father, who covers the returning child with a robe even while restoration is taking place. Christ’s blood covers sin, but His eye ointment also lets a person see where the glory of God has been missed.

Repentance is not condemnation and shame. Repentance is a change of mind, direction, and perspective that brings freedom, healing, and restoration. Christ corrects and disciplines those He loves, then stands at the door and knocks. The door has been shut when Christ gets treated like a guest who has overstayed His welcome, even though He wants fellowship, conversation, and a place on the inside.

The call to get the fire back is a call to return to the first love. First love read the Word, prayed, fasted, loved the brethren, and made room for God instead of giving Him a quick text on the way to work. The armor of God cannot stay in the closet while fiery darts are coming. The church cannot remain quiet, passive, and complacent while claiming that it needs nothing. Christ has not moved; the question is, who moved?
