The Fruit of Gentleness

God’s gentleness is not weakness or softness. God is all-powerful, holy, and totally other, yet he holds his power perfectly under control. The world often sees powerful people run over others, act harsh, and demand their way. God is not like that. God reveals himself as a gentle Father who knows that his children are dust, a good Shepherd who leads into green pastures, and a protecting mother bird who covers his little chicks under his wings.

Jesus shows the very heart of God. Jesus is the Lion of Judah with all authority, but Revelation shows that the Lion conquers as a slaughtered Lamb. Jesus gets victory by being conquered at the cross. His kingdom does not work like the kingdoms of this world, where leaders grab power, take control, and take no prisoners. Jesus has all power, but he is gentle and lowly in heart.

Matthew 11 gives tired, burdened people an invitation: “Come to me.” Jesus does not say, “Clean up your act and come.” Jesus says to the weary, the grieving, the hurt, the sin-struggling, and the overwhelmed, “Come.” His yoke is easy and his burden is light because he is not another Pharisee piling rules on already exhausted people. His rest reaches deeper than a break from hard circumstances. His rest is rest for souls.

Jesus treats sinners with truth and gentleness. Jesus tells the woman at the well the truth about her life, but he does not crush her. Jesus tells the woman caught in adultery, “Go and sin no more,” but he first removes condemnation. Jesus eats with Zacchaeus, restores Peter after his denial, and prays forgiveness over those crucifying him. Gentleness does not withhold truth. Gentleness tells the truth in a way that points broken people back to life.

The Holy Spirit grows this gentleness in those connected to Christ. The flesh wants retaliation, anger, self, and harsh words. The Spirit produces a different kind of life: gentleness in witness, gentleness with opponents, gentleness in restoring a wandering brother or sister, and gentleness at home. A gentle answer can turn away anger, while harshness stirs it up.

Jesus remains the place to run, not the place to hide from. A bruised reed is not broken by him, and a smoldering wick is not put out. Christ’s deepest wishes move toward sinners who come for mercy, help, and love. His heart is for them, even when shame says to run away.
