No matter where you are called to go or what step of faith you are asked to take, you are never alone—God’s presence goes before you and remains with you. Even when the path is uncertain and the details are unclear, the assurance that God is with you is greater than any clarity you could find elsewhere. Just as God promised Jacob that He would be with him as he returned to the land of his fathers, so too does God promise to be with you in every transition, challenge, or new beginning. You may not have all the answers, but you have the One who does, and His presence is your greatest comfort and strength. [01:08:41]
Genesis 31:3 (ESV)
Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
Reflection: Where in your life do you sense God calling you to take a step of faith, and how does the promise of His presence change your willingness to move forward?
God’s protection is often unseen but always active, shielding you from harm in ways you may never fully realize. Just as God intervened to prevent Laban from harming Jacob, He is at work in your life, redirecting conversations, diffusing dangers, and shielding you from situations that could bring harm. There are countless battles God fights on your behalf, and sometimes His protection means closing doors or redirecting your path for your good. Trust that even when you cannot see it, God’s loving hand is guarding you, and He is your ultimate protector. [01:10:34]
Genesis 31:29 (ESV)
“It is in my power to do you harm. But the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’”
Reflection: Can you recall a time when you now realize God protected you from harm or a poor decision? How does remembering His protection encourage you to trust Him today?
God’s providence means that nothing in your life takes Him by surprise—He is sovereignly orchestrating every detail for His glory and your good. Even when life feels like a confusing maze or you find yourself at a dead end, God’s fingerprints are on every moment, and He is never caught off guard. When you feel lost or uncertain, remember that God is working all things together, weaving your story into His greater purpose. You can rest in the assurance that He is in control, even when you cannot see the way forward. [01:13:16]
Romans 8:28 (ESV)
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel uncertain or at a dead end? How can you entrust this situation to God’s providence today?
While God calls us to pursue peace and love with others, there are times when healthy boundaries are necessary, especially in relationships marked by mistrust or harm. The story of Jacob and Laban shows that peace does not always mean closeness; sometimes, the most loving and godly action is to create space and set boundaries. Scripture encourages us to live peaceably with all, as far as it depends on us, recognizing that true peace may require difficult decisions and clear limits. Seek wisdom and courage to establish boundaries where needed, trusting that God honors your pursuit of peace. [01:05:07]
Romans 12:18 (ESV)
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Reflection: Is there a relationship in your life where setting a healthy boundary could lead to greater peace? What step could you take this week to pursue that peace?
Taking a step of obedience—whether it’s making a major life decision, moving forward in faith, or trusting Jesus for the first time—requires courage and a deep trust in God’s character. Like Jacob, you may find yourself at a crossroads, needing to act on what God has shown you. Obedience is not always easy, but God promises to be with you, protect you, and guide you. When you trust Him enough to obey, even when the outcome is uncertain, you experience His faithfulness in new and powerful ways. [01:15:09]
Joshua 1:9 (ESV)
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Reflection: What is one act of obedience God is prompting you to take right now, and what would it look like to trust Him with the outcome?
In Genesis 31, Jacob finds himself at a crossroads—a moment when he realizes that something in his life must change. After years of serving his father-in-law Laban, enduring mistreatment and shifting circumstances, Jacob senses God’s call to return to his homeland. This journey is not just a physical relocation but a profound step of faith, requiring courage, discernment, and trust in God’s promises. Jacob’s story unfolds in three scenes: persuasion, pursuit, and peace.
First, Jacob must persuade his wives, Rachel and Leah, to leave the only home they’ve ever known. Despite the comfort and familiarity of their surroundings, they recognize the injustice they’ve suffered under Laban and choose to trust God’s leading through Jacob. Their willingness to follow, even into uncertainty, is a testament to faith that transcends comfort and security.
As Jacob and his family set out, Laban pursues them, leading to a tense confrontation. Yet, God intervenes, warning Laban in a dream not to harm Jacob. This divine protection is a reminder that God’s hand is often at work behind the scenes, shielding and guiding his people even when threats loom large. The pursuit culminates in a peace treaty between Jacob and Laban—a truce marked more by necessity than warmth, but one that establishes needed boundaries and allows both parties to move forward.
Jacob’s journey is a vivid illustration of how God’s presence, protection, and providence sustain his people through seasons of transition and uncertainty. God does not promise an easy path, but he assures us of his companionship and care. Even when relationships fracture or circumstances become messy, God is orchestrating events for his purposes and our good. For those standing at their own crossroads—facing decisions about relationships, vocation, or faith—Jacob’s story offers hope: God goes with us, guards us, and guides us, even when the way ahead is unclear.
Genesis 31:1–55 (ESV) — (You may want to read the whole chapter, but especially focus on verses 1–24, 36–55.)
So, again, on one hand, you read about passages like Romans 12, 18, where Paul states, if possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. And so Christians are to pursue peace with one another. We're to love one another sacrificially and authentically. Paul talks about that in his letters. We know. From the Beatitudes, that God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called children of God. We know that kingdom people are peacemakers who plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. And so this theme of living with peace with others, we read about it all throughout the pages of Scripture. And, and listen, there are times when the most peaceful things to do in the context of some relationship is to create boundaries with one another. [01:06:05] (58 seconds) #PursuePeaceWisely
``God's presence will go with you. Wherever you go, God's presence will go with you. Genesis 31.3, return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you. This is the comfort that we have from the living God, the God of the universe, the God that made you and knows you. When he sends you somewhere, he does not send you alone. He doesn't promise that the journey or the faith step is going to be easy or that you're going to be able to do it. That you're not going to face opposition or there won't be times when things go sideways. That's not the promise of God. The promise of God is you have me. Like you're not going to go out on your own. When God calls you to go, he does not send you out alone. His presence goes before you and it goes with you. [01:08:32] (56 seconds) #DivineProtection
A third, God's providence, will sustain you. God's providence will sustain you. We see this not only in Genesis 31. We see it not only in the book of Genesis. We see it all throughout the story of Scripture. God's providence is seen in how God upholds all things and governs all things and directs all things for his purposes. [01:12:33] (25 seconds) #FaithStepInChrist
There are times in life when we feel a whole lot like we're going through that maze. And we think to ourselves, man, if I make a wrong turn, if I go left when I should go right, or if I go right when I should go left, and I hit a dead end, I don't know what I'm gonna do. And sometimes even as the people of God, we make decisions. We make decisions that lead us to a place and we think to ourselves, man, I've made a mess of things. And I'm at a dead end in life and I don't know where to go and I don't know what to do. And it's so important in those moments to remember the providence of God. He's not surprised. He's not caught off guard. He works all things, all things, ultimately for his glory and for your good. And that's good news for you and for me today. [01:14:14] (50 seconds)
Something tells me in this room and in this place, there are people. There are people here this morning who find themselves at a crossroads in life. Maybe it's a major decision that you are facing about a job or about a relationship or about finances or about your health. And you feel like the Lord is leading you to go or to move, but you need courage to do it. My hope and prayer for you this morning is that God would remind you that he is present in your life. That he is your great protector. And he is ultimately in control and he can be trusted. [01:15:04] (42 seconds)
Maybe a faith step for you if you're here this morning and you haven't trusted in Jesus. You've never placed your faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins. I want to encourage you this morning in a great faith step for you is to trust in Christ for the very first time. Jesus is God's son, fully God and fully man. He came. He came to this earth some 2,000 years ago and he lived a perfect life and he died a sinner's death. Jesus lived a life that you and I could never live and he died the death that you and I deserve. Jesus was buried and three days later he rose to life and he offers life to those who by faith trust in him. If you have never trusted in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins, I can't imagine a better time to do that than this morning. [01:15:46] (51 seconds)
