Some Things Can Only Be Given" Genesis 28:10-19 (July 19, 2026)

Genesis sets Jacob on the road with a pretty rough backstory. Jacob, mom’s boy, has already talked Esau out of his birthright over a bowl of red lentils. Esau says he is starving, and Jacob sees a chance to get the double share of the inheritance. Later, Isaac wants to bless Esau, his favorite boy, before he dies. Rebekah hears it, puts a plan together, and sends Jacob in with the meal, the hairy disguise, and the deepened voice.

Jacob walks out with the blessing after already getting the birthright, and Esau walks in to find that everything has been taken. Rebekah loves Jacob enough to tell him to get out of town. Jacob heads toward Uncle Laban, 500 miles away, with everything he ever wanted and, in another way, nothing at all. The stone under his head becomes his pillow, and the runaway con artist falls asleep.

The dream is the shock of the whole thing. God does not give Jacob “holy hell.” God gives him something like “holy heaven.” The ladder reaches up to heaven, the angels move up and down, and God speaks the old promise over Jacob: land, descendants, blessing for the nations. Then God adds the personal word: “Behold, I’m with you and I’ll keep you wherever you go.”

The grace in the story is that some things cannot be gotten. They can only be given. Love is like that, and the love of God in particular is like that. Jacob has been grabbing, bargaining, and scheming, but God meets him with a gift. “Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not even know it” becomes the line that tells the truth about his life.

The human heart still longs for connection with God, and people go to holy places looking for it. Jacob does not go looking for a holy place. Holy ground finds him when he least expects it. God’s presence shows up in ordinary moments too, in forgiving love, in beauty, in the eyes of a child, or in a person who comes alongside at just the right time.

The ramps built through Ozark Mission Project become that same kind of holy ground. The grin on Cairo’s face and the gratitude of Beatrice’s daughter show love becoming real. The teenagers’ hearts connect with the pain in front of them, not for praise, but because their hearts are beating with God’s heart. Small things done with great love become places where the Lord is surely present.
