Bible Reading
Genesis 12:1-9 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
[04:29]So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.
[05:03]Hebrews 11:8-10 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
[26:58] [44:23]1 Corinthians 1:26-29 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
[14:10]Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
[31:24]Observation questions
- In Genesis 12:1-3, what does God tell Abram to leave behind, and what promises does God make to him?
- What details in Genesis 12:4-9 show that Abram obeyed before he had possession of the land or saw the promise fulfilled? [20:05]
- When Abram arrives in Canaan, what problem is immediately stated in verse 6, and how does Abram respond after God speaks to him? [35:30]
- According to Hebrews 11:8-10, how does Abraham live in the promised land, and what future reality is he looking toward?
Interpretation questions
- Why does Abram’s background and God’s choice of him help show that God’s call begins with grace rather than a person’s worthiness? How does 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 reinforce this truth? [11:28]
- What does it mean that Abram’s faith was in God rather than in a predictable outcome? How does God’s limited guidance—“the land that I will show you”—require that kind of faith? [22:24]
- Why is it important that Abram builds altars and calls on the Lord while the Canaanites still occupy the land? What does this reveal about worship before God’s promises are fully seen? [36:51]
- How does Matthew 28:18-20 connect the call to “go” with ordinary Christian obedience? Why is making disciples more than inviting someone to a church event? [31:43]
Application questions
- God called Abram while he came from a pagan household and had done nothing to earn the call. Are there parts of your past, present struggles, or sense of inadequacy that make you assume God cannot use you? How does God’s grace toward Abram challenge that assumption? [12:46]
- Abram left the places that gave him stability, protection, identity, and familiarity. What parts of life are hardest for you to place under God’s direction—family expectations, career plans, finances, comfort, reputation, or something else? [18:03]
- God often does not give the whole map before calling His people to obey. What is one clear next step God has already made known through Scripture that you may be delaying because you want more certainty first? [30:54]
- Jesus calls His people to make disciples in everyday life. What could gospel-shaped faithfulness look like this week in your home, workplace, neighborhood, friendships, or regular activities? [33:31]
- Abram reached the land God promised, but he found it occupied. When an obstacle appears after you have tried to obey God, are you tempted to assume you misunderstood God’s will? What would continued trust and obedience look like in one current obstacle? [29:12]
- Abram worshiped before he saw the land, nation, and worldwide blessing fully fulfilled. Where are you waiting on God right now, and what would it look like to keep worshiping and calling on the Lord in that waiting? [37:27]
- A life of faith is not a perfect straight line; there are valleys, failures, and renewed trust in God. When your faith feels weak or you have failed, what helps you return to God rather than giving up? [40:01]
