Giving is not just about the amount, but the attitude of the heart; God delights in those who give willingly and joyfully, not out of obligation or reluctance. When you give with a cheerful spirit, you reflect the very heart of God, who gave His best for you. True generosity flows from a place of gratitude for all that God has done, and it is an act of worship that honors Him. As you consider your own giving, remember that God is not looking for leftovers or gifts given grudgingly, but for hearts that overflow with joy at the opportunity to participate in His work. [14:08]
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (NASB)
Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you can give with more joy and less reluctance this week, trusting God with the outcome?
God promises to supply all that you need so that you can abound in every good work; His grace is more than enough for every circumstance. When you prioritize giving, you open yourself to experience God’s abundant grace, which is far greater than any material gift you could offer. God’s sufficiency means that He will meet your needs—spiritually, materially, and physically—not just for your own benefit, but so you can serve others and glorify Him. Trusting in God’s provision frees you from fear and empowers you to give generously, knowing that He is faithful to provide. [24:18]
2 Corinthians 9:8 (NASB)
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.
Reflection: Where do you need to trust God’s sufficiency today so that you can step out in generosity toward someone else?
Our acts of generosity are a response to the indescribable gift God has given us in Jesus Christ; giving is an act of worship that mirrors God’s own sacrificial love. When you give, you are not just meeting needs—you are reflecting the very heart of the gospel and pointing others to the grace and goodness of God. The ultimate motivation for generosity is not guilt or pressure, but gratitude for what God has already done. Let your giving be a joyful response to the love, mercy, and provision you have received, and let it become a testimony that draws others to Christ. [39:32]
2 Corinthians 9:15 (NASB)
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
Reflection: How does remembering God’s gift of Jesus inspire you to be more generous in your daily life?
The size of your harvest is directly tied to the size of your sowing; when you give generously, you can expect God to multiply your impact, both materially and spiritually. This principle is not just about finances, but about every area of life—when you sow seeds of faith, obedience, and love, God is faithful to bring a harvest of blessing, peace, and joy. Sometimes the return is not material, but spiritual—God may grant you peace in chaos, joy in pain, or love in disappointment. Trust that as you sow generously, God will provide a harvest that blesses you and others. [12:19]
Proverbs 11:24-25 (ESV)
One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.
Reflection: What is one “seed” you can sow today—whether time, encouragement, or resources—trusting God to bring a harvest in His way?
Generosity not only meets needs but also fosters gratitude, praise, and unity within the community of faith; it creates a cycle where blessings flow both to the giver and the receiver. When you give, you become a conduit of God’s grace, inspiring others to give and multiplying the impact for God’s kingdom. This cycle of generosity builds up the church, strengthens relationships, and leaves a legacy for future generations. As you participate in giving, you help create an environment where God is glorified and lives are transformed. [33:49]
Acts 4:32-33 (ESV)
Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
Reflection: Who in your community can you bless today, and how might your generosity encourage others to do the same?
Generosity is not just a financial transaction; it is a reflection of the heart transformed by the grace of God. When God’s people testify boldly and joyfully about the impact of the gospel in their lives, it stirs others to participate in something greater than themselves. Just as a simple recommendation can lead a crowd to a gas station for the best chicken in town, so too can our unapologetic witness about God’s goodness inspire a movement of generosity that changes lives, builds communities, and advances the kingdom of God.
The principle of sowing and reaping, as Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 9, is not merely about the amount given, but the spirit in which it is given. God loves a cheerful giver—one who gives not out of compulsion or reluctance, but from a heart overflowing with gratitude for all God has done. Our giving is an act of worship, a tangible response to the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ. It is not about meeting a quota or fulfilling an obligation, but about aligning our hearts with God’s own generous nature.
God’s promise is that He will supply all our needs, not so we can hoard or indulge, but so we can abound in every good work. When we give, we open ourselves to experience God’s grace in new ways—grace that is always greater than the gift itself. This grace sustains us, provides for us, and enables us to be a blessing to others. The cycle of generosity is not just about resources; it is about gratitude, community, and the ongoing testimony of God’s faithfulness.
Every believer is called to examine their own heart and attitude toward giving. Whether young or old, we are challenged to move beyond selfishness and scarcity, to become conduits of God’s provision. Our acts of generosity are not just for the benefit of others, but are a declaration of trust in God’s sufficiency and a participation in His ongoing work in the world. Ultimately, we are invited to give as God gave—sacrificially, joyfully, and with a vision for legacy that outlives us.
2 Corinthians 9:6-15 — (Main text of the sermon; read the whole passage together.)
- Proverbs 11:24-26
(Alluded to in the sermon as a supporting principle about sowing and reaping.)
- Luke 21:1-4
(Referenced in the sermon as an example of mature, sacrificial giving.)
If we all was unapologetic about our actions of love towards God, that we gave generously for the glory of God, then we might have individuals who not be buying chicken, but be investing into the kingdom of God, for the glory of God, so that it can be a part of something that is greater than ourselves. [00:07:00]
Because for you and I to give and we give grudgently or out of a sense of obligation, guess what? You miss the blessing of giving. If the only reason you giving cuz I'm telling you to give, you missed it. I didn't die for you. [00:14:52]
Our ability and capacity to be a generous giver is solely tied to our individuality of our own salvation. Yes, sir. You You say, "What do you mean?" Because he says each one must do. It's not a collective thing. We we got to do it within ourselves. [00:15:56]
It is a matter of our own individual free will. He says, not grudgingly or under compulsion. And therefore whatever we have purpose in our heart to give towards the work of God ladies and gentlemen that's what we should do. We should give according to our ability and we should give willingly because giving is not only about the gift. It's about our attitude towards giving. [00:17:00]
Literally it means a hilarious giver. In other words, we should be giving hilariously. All right. We ought to approach giving laughing and excited. We should be happy about the opportunity to give generously. Yeah. This attitude we must adopt in our giving and in our actions because we understand that our capacity to give towards God only comes from God and not ourselves. [00:17:36]
The maturity of Christians can be measured by the way and the attitude with which we give to the Lord's work. He suggested broke down in basic six categories. First off, he talks about the infancy stage. He says this is marked by the non-giver. [00:18:56]
Our goal in this Christian walk should be to reach the graduate level of giving where we give by faith. We give sacrificially with a cheerful attitude trusting that God will meet all of our needs. And because God has been good in our lives, I I know I I I know uh there are some adults in the building. [00:20:49]
I want to challenge you to just set aside something small out of what you have to God. Amen. I want you to set it aside and donate it as your first fruit offering. I believe that when you do this intentionally, not haphazardly, not wishing that a check come in, but when you decide to say, "I'm going to give this amount and I'm going to be intentional," then it will help shift your focus and you won't be worried about what you don't have. [00:22:00]
What you cannot do is allow the world to deter you or to tell you how to give back to God who saved you. All right. That's right. Bible says we must be a cheerful giver. We must know that we've been empowered to give cheerfully and that our God loves a cheerful giver. [00:23:32]
When giving is a priority in our lives, it opens up an opportunity for us to experience God's grace, which is bigger and better than our gift. Y'all missed that. Okay, let me say it again. When when you get an opportunity, I get an opportunity to give to God and we give generously. [00:25:45]
Because when you know that you know that you know that you could not be here by yourself. Then as a result, you recognize that God is giving me grace because I have faith in him. It's one thing to talk about faith. Yes sir. There's another thing to live by faith. [00:27:36]
Regardless of your desperate circumstances, however they desperate may be, here is the truth. Hear me. If you want to give, God will provide for you to give. All right. That's the truth. Yeah. The whole truth and nothing but the truth. [00:28:54]
Because what we have to realize, and this is a principle, ladies and gentlemen, we have to realize that the more we give, the more it will be given back to you with a mindset that you're going to give more again. Yes. And so therefore we must know that in giving God provides us so that we can share with others so that we can create a cycle of blessings and of gratitude. [00:33:38]
Therefore, the giving that you give, it's a matter of worship unto God. If you see giving as anything else, you've missed the blessing of giving. It is a part of your worship experience. Just like you praying, just like you hearing the preach word, just like you singing, just like you serving, giving is also a matter of a spiritual diff discipline that brings forth an understanding that you are worshiping God. [00:39:50]
To get anything out of a flint, which is a type of rock, you would have to keep hammering it. And the only thing that you would get is chips and a spark. So, you really don't get nothing out of it. To get out of a sponge, what you would have to do, you have to squeeze the water to get something out of it. [00:41:14]
Because when you recognize that you are a honeycomb, nobody have to pump you up to give. because you recognize that the reason that you do give is because the grace has been established within your life based on your personal relationship with the Lord and you want to give back to him because he's been so good to you and he's kept you and he's healed you and he's delivered you and he's provided for you and because he's done all these things for you, your mindset is is that I want to Give back to God because God has been good to me.
