Bible ReadingMalachi 4:5-6 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
[04:04]1 Kings 19:19-21 “So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, ‘Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.’ And he said to him, ‘Go back again, for what have I done to you?’ And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.”
[08:04]2 Kings 2:1-14 “Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel.’ But Elisha said, ‘As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, ‘Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?’ And he said, ‘Yes, I know it; keep quiet.’ Elijah said to him, ‘Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho.’ But he said, ‘As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, ‘Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?’ And he answered, ‘Yes, I know it; keep quiet.’ Then Elijah said to him, ‘Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.’ But he said, ‘As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.’ And Elisha said, ‘Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.’ And he said, ‘You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.’ And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, ‘My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, ‘Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?’ And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.”

[33:33]Observation questions- What actions show that Elijah offered Elisha an opportunity to follow, and what actions show that Elisha received that calling seriously? [09:20]
- Elijah tells Elisha to stay behind several times. What does Elisha repeatedly say, and what does that reveal about his commitment during the journey? [14:15]
- What happens at the Jordan the first time Elijah and Elisha cross it, and what happens when Elisha returns there alone? [30:27]
- What does Elisha ask for when Elijah asks, “What do you want?” What things does Elisha not ask for? [21:21]
Interpretation questions- Malachi describes hearts turning between fathers and children. What might it look like for older believers to give spiritual wisdom and example rather than only criticize younger believers? [05:27]
- Elisha burns the equipment that represented his former work and security. Why does this picture a serious response to God’s calling instead of a moment of emotional excitement? [09:39]
- Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and Jordan describe different parts of a difficult journey. How can cycles, wrestling, desolation, and separation become places where faith is formed instead of reasons to quit? [33:57]
- Elisha first watches Elijah strike the Jordan, but later must strike it himself. Why is it important for believers to honor the faith of those before them while also developing faith of their own? [31:43]
Application questions- Is there an older believer, parent, mentor, or church member whose faith, endurance, or wisdom has helped shape you? What is one specific way you could thank them, learn from them, or ask them to share their story with you? [24:40]
- Is there someone younger in faith or younger in age to whom you could pass on encouragement, Scripture, practical wisdom, or your testimony? What could that look like this week? [35:43]
- Elisha did not keep an easy path back to his old life. Is there an “oxen and plows” backup plan that keeps you tempted to return to an old pattern, compromise, or identity? What would a faithful next step away from that old path look like? [17:07]
- Where do you presently feel stuck in a cycle like Gilgal—perhaps in your thoughts, relationships, habits, work, or spiritual life? What would it look like to keep walking with God instead of settling there? [11:35]
- Is there a place in your life that feels like Jericho: devastated, dry, disappointing, or hard to understand? What are some truthful words of faith and life you can speak over that situation without pretending the struggle is not real? [15:50]
- What needs to stay behind you as you come to a Jordan-type boundary in your life? Is there a fear, bitterness, failure, unhealthy relationship, or old way of living that God may be calling you to leave behind? [18:46]
- When you face something that feels bigger than your own strength, whose faith do you tend to depend on first? How can you personally trust the unchanging God and take one step of faith this week? [32:14]
