Full Circle Moments: Embracing God's Faithfulness and Transformation

Summary

In our gathering today, we explored the concept of "full circle moments" in life, those instances where we find ourselves back where we started, yet with growth and change. These moments connect our past and present, offering closure and a path forward. We began by considering personal examples, like birthdays and family milestones, and then delved into the biblical narrative of Jacob and Joseph, highlighting three significant full circle moments.

The first moment is Jacob leaving Canaan again. Jacob's life is a journey of leaving and returning, much like Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit." In Genesis 46, Jacob leaves Canaan for Egypt to reunite with his son Joseph, whom he thought was dead. God reassures Jacob of His presence and promises, echoing the faithfulness He showed when Jacob first left Canaan. This story reminds us of God's unchanging faithfulness, even when our circumstances change.

The second moment is the emotional reunion of Joseph with his father, Jacob. This reunion is a resurrection moment, as Jacob believed Joseph was lost forever. It mirrors our deep longing for complete reunification with Jesus, a longing that will be fully satisfied when we see Him face to face. This reunion is a foretaste of the ultimate joy and fulfillment we will experience in Christ's presence.

The third moment involves Jacob's mixed-up blessings. Jacob blesses Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, elevating them to the status of his own sons. The unexpected twist is that Judah, not Joseph, receives the greatest blessing. Judah's line will produce kings, culminating in Jesus, the Lion of Judah. This blessing points to the eternal kingdom of peace and justice that Jesus will establish.

These full circle moments challenge us to examine our hearts. Are we faithful to God, or are our hearts divided? God desires our complete devotion, and through Jesus, the faithful Son, we can find hope and transformation. Even if we've messed up, there's hope for change through Christ. As we face life's final full circle moment—death—we can have confidence in Jesus, who receives us into His eternal kingdom.

Key Takeaways:

1. God's Faithfulness in Our Journeys: Just as God reassured Jacob of His presence and promises, He remains faithful to us through life's ups and downs. Our circumstances may change, but God's character and promises are unchanging, providing us with strength and courage. [48:13]

2. The Deep Longing for Reunion with Christ: The reunion of Joseph and Jacob reflects our longing for complete reunification with Jesus. While we experience His presence now, the ultimate fulfillment of our longing will come when we see Him face to face, satisfying every desire of our hearts. [52:14]

3. The Unexpected Blessing of Judah: Judah's unexpected blessing points to the coming of Jesus, the Lion of Judah, who will establish an eternal kingdom. This reminds us that God's plans often defy our expectations, and His purposes are greater than we can imagine. [01:04:16]

4. Hope for Transformation Through Christ: Judah's transformation from a flawed individual to a leader willing to sacrifice for others shows that change is possible through God's grace. No matter our past mistakes, there is hope for renewal and growth in Christ. [58:22]

5. Confidence in Life's Final Full Circle Moment: As we face death, we can have confidence in Jesus, who receives us into His eternal kingdom. Our faith in Him assures us of a future where all our longings are fulfilled, and we are united with Him forever. [01:08:16]

Day 1: God's Unchanging Faithfulness in Changing Circumstances
In life, we often face changes and uncertainties, but God's faithfulness remains constant. Just as God reassured Jacob of His presence and promises when he left Canaan for Egypt, He reassures us today. Jacob's journey was marked by leaving and returning, yet God's character and promises never wavered. This truth provides us with strength and courage to navigate life's ups and downs, knowing that God's faithfulness is our anchor. [48:13]

Genesis 28:15 (ESV): "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

Reflection: Think of a current situation where you feel uncertain or anxious. How can you remind yourself of God's unchanging faithfulness in this circumstance today?

Day 2: Longing for Reunion with Christ
The reunion of Joseph and Jacob is a powerful reflection of our deep longing for complete reunification with Jesus. While we experience His presence now, the ultimate fulfillment of our longing will come when we see Him face to face. This reunion is a foretaste of the joy and fulfillment we will experience in Christ's presence, satisfying every desire of our hearts. [52:14]

1 John 3:2 (ESV): "Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is."

Reflection: Consider a moment when you felt a deep longing for something more in your spiritual life. How can you cultivate a deeper sense of anticipation for your ultimate reunion with Christ?

Day 3: The Unexpected Blessing of Judah
Judah's unexpected blessing points to the coming of Jesus, the Lion of Judah, who will establish an eternal kingdom. This reminds us that God's plans often defy our expectations, and His purposes are greater than we can imagine. Judah, not Joseph, receives the greatest blessing, highlighting the surprising ways God works to fulfill His promises. [01:04:16]

Genesis 49:10 (ESV): "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples."

Reflection: Reflect on a time when God's plans for your life were different from what you expected. How can you trust in His greater purposes today, even when they defy your expectations?

Day 4: Hope for Transformation Through Christ
Judah's transformation from a flawed individual to a leader willing to sacrifice for others shows that change is possible through God's grace. No matter our past mistakes, there is hope for renewal and growth in Christ. This transformation is a testament to the power of God's grace to bring about change in our lives, offering us hope for a new beginning. [58:22]

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."

Day 5: Confidence in Life's Final Full Circle Moment
As we face death, we can have confidence in Jesus, who receives us into His eternal kingdom. Our faith in Him assures us of a future where all our longings are fulfilled, and we are united with Him forever. This confidence in life's final full circle moment provides us with peace and assurance as we journey through life, knowing that our ultimate destination is secure in Christ. [01:08:16]

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (ESV): "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord."

Reflection: How does the assurance of being received into Jesus' eternal kingdom impact your perspective on life and death? What can you do today to live with greater confidence in this promise?

Quotes

And God did that. He was faithful to his promise. And Jacob did come back to Canaan and to the promised land. And now 60 years later, we're in our text again, chapter 46, and Jacob is leaving. He's leaving the promised land. He's leaving Canaan. He might have had some misgivings about it, even though he was desperate to see his son Joseph again, whom he loved. He wanted to rush to meet him, but in his heart, should I leave? Should I leave? And so this is what God says to him in chapter 46. [00:46:12]

I am the God, the God of your father. He said, do not be afraid to go down to Egypt for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you and I will surely bring you back again. Of course, Jacob is going to die in Egypt. His bones get brought back. But when he says, you, Jacob, you, Israel, he's talking about all of his descendants, his whole family, all of them will come back in God's time. [00:46:56]

He is faithful to his character and to his promises. He says, I'm going to do this and he does it. And in this story of Joseph, we get all these changes and all these ups and downs and different circumstances. But one thing is constant. God is faithful. He remains the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. And that's one good reason to read these epic stories over long periods of time is that they show us God's unchanging faithfulness to us that gives us strength and courage in the moment. [00:47:26]

That was the reality of their hearts. God is faithful and unchanging. But the people were unfaithful. This is a challenge to us, isn't it? To inspect our hearts. Am I faithful? Now, is my heart divided? Or is it undivided? And that's not just a matter of 50 -50. Even if our heart is 90 -10, the thing is, God wants all of our heart. [00:49:55]

He wants all of us. Have I relinquished all to him? Have I surrendered all to him? And I've seen this full circle moment in my life happen repeatedly. Is I've had to come again and again and again to the point where I say, God, I relinquish my agendas, my plans, and I give my heart fully to you. I trust in you for salvation. I believe in you. [00:50:20]

And we already experience, you know, unification with Jesus through faith. That already happens. And yet it's not the full and final reunification. We still have a longing in our hearts for that. This is what Jesus said to his disciples on the night before he died. He said, now is your time of grief, but I will see you again, and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. They thought they had lost him. He was gone. He was dead. And then he resurrected. And they could touch and hug and see him again, their Lord and Savior. [00:56:28]

And that is when we die or when Jesus comes, when we can actually see him face to face and become like him and to live in the glory and the beauty of his presence. And then all the longings of our heart will be completely satisfied. Because in this world, we have disappointments. We have unfulfilled longings. We have pain and we have suffering. And we can fixate on that or we can be reminded that our longings will be satisfied completely and wholly someday when we are able to see Jesus. [00:57:27]

And then we get the big plot twist in the whole story related to blessings. We get a huge plot twist because something totally unexpected happens. Jacob calls in all his sons, and he's going to bless all of them. That's chapter 49. Although some of the blessings look a lot more like curses. Okay, Reuben and Simeon and Levi really get curses, not blessings. [01:02:15]

And so, but he's going to bless all of his sons. He says, Joseph is the prince among his brothers. But the person who gets by far the greatest blessing isn't Joseph. It's Judah. What? We thought this was the story of Joseph. Maybe we should call it the rise of Judah. Judah gets the blessing. Joseph's called a prince among his brothers. But God says, Judah's descendants will be kings who will rule over his brothers and the nations of the world. [01:02:41]

King David will be the first king in the line of Judah. And God will make a promise to King David that one of King David's sons will rule from his throne forever over an eternal kingdom of peace, righteousness, and justice. That's a huge promise. Now, Judah is exalted because of this blessing. But this descendant, we know who he is. It's the Messiah. It's Jesus. [01:05:25]

And he has resurrected and is now exalted above all. And he will return and set up his eternal kingdom. And this is, we already get glimpses of this and praise and worship towards this. Look at the end of the story. This is kind of the, this is kind of an ultimate full circle moment, right? This, this is a praise and worship service in heaven in the book of Revelation. See the lion of the tribe of Judah. That's the descendant of Judah. The descendant of David who will be king. It's Jesus. [01:05:58]

God can change our hearts. He can. He gives us hope. And it's through Jesus Christ. Who was the faithful son. The one who went to the cross. The one who now offers us new life through faith in him. [01:08:02]
