Fulfillment Through Serving: Discovering Your Ministry
Summary
In this week's message, we delve into the profound truth that each of us is made for ministry. This understanding is rooted in the belief that our ministry is determined by our design. God has uniquely wired each of us with specific talents, temperaments, and gifts, complemented by our life experiences, to fulfill a purpose that brings true fulfillment. Fulfillment in life is not found in status or material possessions but in serving others. We are called to discover what God has equipped us to do and to engage in it wholeheartedly.
Ministry, derived from the Greek word "diaconess," meaning to serve, involves using our God-given gifts to serve Him and meet the needs of others. We minister in three directions: vertically to the Lord through worship, horizontally to other believers, and circularly to unbelievers, bringing light and flavor to the world. We also address three areas of need: physical, emotional, and spiritual. Meeting these needs is a legitimate form of ministry, as Jesus exemplified in Matthew 25.
We are created, called, authorized, commanded, and equipped for ministry. God has prepared good works in advance for us to do, and we are His ambassadors on earth, representing His kingdom. Our ministry is not optional; it is a command to serve others as Jesus did. We are equipped through the five-fold ministry to build up the church and touch the world. We are accountable for how we use our gifts and will be rewarded for our ministry both on earth and in heaven.
To discover our ministry, we must dedicate our bodies, eliminate distractions, evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, work with other believers, and start using our gifts. Serving is not limited to the church; it extends to everyday life, where we show kindness, care, and compassion. Our service is a reflection of Jesus' love, and it is through serving that we fulfill our purpose and make a difference in the world.

Day 1: Fulfillment Through Service
True fulfillment in life is not found in status or material possessions but in serving others. This understanding is rooted in the belief that God has uniquely equipped each of us with specific talents, temperaments, and gifts to fulfill a purpose that brings true fulfillment. Engaging wholeheartedly in what God has equipped us to do leads to a fulfilling life. Serving others is a reflection of Jesus' love, and it is through serving that we fulfill our purpose and make a difference in the world. [02:30]
"For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." (Galatians 5:13, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one person in your life who could benefit from your unique gifts today. How can you serve them in a way that reflects Jesus' love?
Day 2: Threefold Ministry
Ministry involves serving in three directions: vertically to the Lord through worship, horizontally to other believers, and circularly to unbelievers, bringing light and flavor to the world. This comprehensive approach ensures that we meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, as Jesus exemplified in Matthew 25. By ministering in these three directions, we fulfill our calling to be ambassadors of God's kingdom on earth. [10:00]
"Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Philippians 2:4, ESV)
Reflection: Consider how you can minister in each of the three directions today. What specific actions can you take to serve God, fellow believers, and those who do not yet know Him?
Day 3: Created and Called for Ministry
God has uniquely designed each of us for ministry, preparing good works in advance for us to do. We are called to be His ambassadors, representing His kingdom on earth. This calling is not optional; it is a command to serve others as Jesus did. By embracing our unique design and calling, we can effectively represent God's kingdom and fulfill the purpose He has set for us. [22:30]
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)
Reflection: Reflect on the unique talents and experiences God has given you. How can you use them to fulfill the good works He has prepared for you?
Day 4: Equipped and Accountable
We are equipped through the five-fold ministry to build up the church and touch the world. As God's ambassadors, we are accountable for how we use our gifts and will be rewarded for our ministry both on earth and in heaven. This accountability encourages us to be diligent and faithful in our service, knowing that our efforts have eternal significance. [34:10]
"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." (1 Peter 4:10, ESV)
Reflection: Evaluate how you are currently using your gifts. Are there areas where you can be more diligent or faithful in your service to others?
Day 5: Discovering Your Ministry
To discover your ministry, you must dedicate your body, eliminate distractions, evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, work with other believers, and start using your gifts. Serving extends beyond the church to everyday life, where we show kindness, care, and compassion. By actively seeking to discover and engage in your ministry, you reflect Jesus' love and fulfill your purpose. [41:57]
"Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you." (1 Timothy 4:14, ESV)
Reflection: What steps can you take today to eliminate distractions and focus on discovering and engaging in your ministry? How can you involve others in this journey?
Quotes
"Fulfillment in life comes from service. It doesn't come from status. It doesn't come from acquiring things. Fulfillment in life really does come from serving others. A lot of times people say I'm frustrated or I'm bored or I'm unfulfilled. And my answer to that is you just really need to discover what it is God has equipped you already to do and get involved doing it. Then you will find fulfillment why because you were made for more you were made for ministry." [00:00:16] (30 seconds)
"Serving or ministry is using whatever gifts God has given us to serve him and meet the needs of others. As servants or as ministry, we minister in three directions. First, we minister vertically or we minister to the Lord. We do that through worship. We've been doing that this morning. First, we worship. We are actually ministering to the Lord when we do that. When you lift your hands, when you sing, when you praise the Lord through clapping or dancing or whatever outward form of worship you express to God, you are ministering to the Lord." [00:02:49] (36 seconds)
"God formed you and shaped you even before you were born the Bible says the beginning in your mother's womb God God was molding and shaping you for his purpose for ministry. Psalm 139 14 through 16 says I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." [00:08:26] (32 seconds)
"Even if you ever had a hard time with self-esteem if you never believed in yourself you just need to pull up first Peter 2 and 9 and just remind yourself once in a while that I am a chosen I am called I am special to God I am special to God. My primary identity is that I am one of his special possessions I am called I am chosen that's my identity I am a minister of Christ. If you let that sink into your life it'll really change your perspective on who you are it'll let you change your perspective on everything." [00:11:46] (36 seconds)
"An ambassador is someone who represents a kingdom or a government the Bible says you're an ambassador on the earth for Jesus Christ. I was always fascinated by government growing up if you grew up in Virginia in 12th grade you had to take U.S government as a subject at least when I was growing up you had to do that and I was always fascinated by the role of the ambassador and his role in other countries he would go there as an employee by the president and he would live in in at the uh in special places in these countries and he would be there and he would speak on behalf of the president to governments around the world and when he spoke he represented a country and what he said what he did was representative of a country from far away it didn't matter how far he was what he said mattered and it held weight and God says that you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ on the earth and so when you walk into a room when you speak to any situation when you do anything in this earth you are his ambassador and so you represent him." [00:14:05] (73 seconds)
"The secret of a fulfilled life is to find the ministry for which God made you and get right in the middle of it you're going to find fulfillment there more than any other area of your life and until you get in the middle of it you're always going to be searching for something because you weren't made to do anything else yeah you do other things but you weren't made to do anything else except to find the thing that God created you to do and do it and you're commanded to minister." [00:16:40] (27 seconds)
"One day I'm going to stand before God and I'm going to give an account of the talents the gifts and the abilities that he's given me and one day you are too one day God's going to say to you what did you do with what you were given instead of focusing on what you don't have you're going to have to stand and be accountable for what you do have when I stand before God I'm not going to be standing there going but you didn't let me sing like Jordan and Lisa he's not it's not going to work I'm going to have to give an account for the things he did gift me to do because there's a lot of things I do and do well and those are the things God is going to hold me accountable for that's what he's going to be inquiring about and so I've got to give an account for those things and you do too." [00:22:52] (52 seconds)
"Think about your struggles today. Think about your struggles. Some of you have been through crisis, addiction, and you came out stronger on the other side. What others would disqualify you for, Jesus welcomes you with open arms. And not only does he welcome you, the very thing that others would disqualify you for, he uses those things to be a blessing to others. I learned this firsthand. The minister that I am today is completely different than the minister I was 15 years ago. Because I went through some things 12, 10, and 12 years ago that made me a different person. And I connect with people now that I never could have connected with before." [00:38:50] (59 seconds)
"Because you were made for more, you were destined to change the world. You were made for ministry. Matthew 20, 27 and 28. Jesus speaking, once again, referring back to this verse. It says, whoever wants to become first among you must serve the rest of you like a slave. In the same way, the Son of Man did not come to be served. He came to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many people. Jesus calls each of us to a life of service." [00:40:54] (34 seconds)
"You're hurting you're serving you cannot be selfish and serve at the same time Because service is about ministering to the needs of others Not for personal gain or selfish ambition But in love showing genuine care and compassion that only comes from Jesus Christ If you'd stand with me all over this house John 13 and 35 says by this all will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another Jesus didn't say That his disciples would be known for fabulous preaching or great conviction or eloquent speech He said I want you to have a reputation in this world as people who love others and are willing to serve As a church we want to be known as a place of love A place where you'll be loved and a place where you have opportunity to show love A place where you can meet needs and a place where you can have your needs met We want to be known as people who in love have learned to serve the needs of others."
